My parents are in the culinary world and from different cultures, so I've been subjected to a lot of "unusual" stuff: frog legs, escargot (mmmm snails), rabbit (outer parts and especially the kidneys), tripe (beef and sheep), cow tongue, cow liver, moose tongue, moose heart, dried moose (and pemmican), ducks, geese, parts of elks and deer, black bear, etc.

I eat duck, goose, frog legs, tongue, tripe, rabbit, kidney, hearts and never found them strange. I guess it depends where you grew up. Elk, bears and moose sound exotic. I occasionally eat horse, buffalo (bison), and brains (in tacos don't know which animal) but it seems normal to me. Doesn't anyone like to eat grasshoppers, snake, or roaches? I never found it weird, but a lot of people I've met were all, "GROSSS!" I don't know...I think it's all quite tasty! Bison is really nice when slow-roasted. I haven't tried snake yet either.

Mexican horchata is a bit different (they use cinnamon and sometimes lime), and I like it too. You can still find places in Metro Manila that serve horchata, but it is becoming increasingly difficult.
Even the classic, native chocolate drinks seem to be slowly going out of style. I've noticed recently that many shops from the local chains will list it on their menus but often don't even bother to make any -- they just tell you that they're out when you order it. Pisses me off. Other places just make the instant hot cocoa, which I absolutely despise. And don't get me started on that Milo crap... Why is it getting so hard to satisfy my tsokolate-eh fix, when I'm on the road? Goddammit!

Oh... Kangaroo Tail, Whitichi Grubs (Australian Maggots), Pakistani Goat Hoofs melted down for 2 weeks and flavored with spices, jellyfish, geoduct sashimi, live Tahitian scallops still thumping in my mouth, Caribbean Land Crab. Atole..the orginal Mayan Hot Chocolate and sharkfin galore every which way from the best to the stuff they stuff in Dim-Sum. Last month I got some Nameko mushrooms from Japan. They were a little slimy and not all that differen't. Oh and the same time I choped down on some Bracken Fern ..which I still got in the frig. Manzanita Honey, Black Seed Honey, Curry Leaves from Sri Lanka, Persian Saffron, Cloudberry Jam from Sweden all grace my cubbards. Old Marine saying, "Travel the world, meet new people...and kill them." I'll just have to add take their stuff as well. But of course! Being an equal-opportunity nation;)

Growing up, my mom used to force me to eat that small fish cuisine ("dilis" or something), and I absolutely hated it. I used to tell her I was fasting instead. What I really like too is the "champorado" (chocolate rice) and "maiz con hielo" (iced corn beverage/dessert). Of course, the "halo-halo" (quite similar to "maiz con hielo" but with more ingredients) remains an all-time favorite. Yes, I've tried using snow as an ingredient in lieu of the crushed ice, but it didn't taste as good. Lol.
