^ Oh gods, yes. Some people really just do not think when they speak. cewek- Re:"'too' Chinese": I once had a coworker tell me "Oh, well you don't *look* mixed" in this "Oh, poor thing, don't worry, it's not so bad" kind of tone Edited to add: I should also note that this was the same one who asked me why Asians always try to "jew" people out of money..

Check Lacan and the mirror theory. If you google it, disregard the self-help books.
'mirror' is theoretical and metaphorical. Think literature, media, society, family.
Regarding the ea myth specifically.. goodness, what is there to ask? Milk it. Whatever else you feel you ought to prove to/in society, go do it. Do you need an invitation?

I find it somewhat disturbing that an AF who had a child with a WM would ask this.

No need to be disturbed. Eaparent is back after posting "just once" on this thread. (as it can get hectic as a working mom) For those of you who responded: Thank you for sharing your feelings and experiences on this. You really don't know how valuable it is to a parent. As you can see from my posting, I feel it is very important for parents to better understand the cultural experience if their child. The strange questions and comments I get on my son's EA appearance (however positive or negative it is) have potential impact on his feelings towards his mixed heritage. My job as a parent is to foster a healthy attitude and environment. Hope this relieves the "disturbing" feeling this question might have provoked.

I think percentagewise EAs are better looking...meaning the majority of EA's are more attractive than the majority of whites or asians I disagree - i think that most EA's are assumed to be good looking beause either - a) a clear mix can be discerned b) the person looks more european (esp in Asia) Many eurasians who just look plain Asian fall into the black hole meaning they are not associated with being Eurasian at all. Im not saying that these people are not good looking, but its just that there are probably far more eurasians out there than is immediately apparent. I am sure there are many eurasians who are just brushed off as being either a funny looking asians, or a funny looking europeans,or funny looking whatevers and that isnt funny - comedy funny, but funny - odd. Im also pretty sure that every time the eurasian beauty myth is brought up, somehow, somewhere, a not-society-decreed-beautiful eurasian feels a little bit uglier. *edited for pathetic attempts at spelling *

I asked my mother what she thought about this EA girl I know and she said she was an ugly EA. When I asked why, she said it was because she looked too Chinese.

I thought so, too, because I've always thought she was one of the better looking ones.

I suppose many people have different definitions for beauty. Its quite sad really, and the eurasian beauty myth lends credibility to such shallow definitions - which are more often than not based on the media.
It would be interesting to see what would have happened if the Africans had been the pacesetters instead of the Europeans in the yesteryears, thus changing life as we know it, with Africans being plastered everywhere, on the TV's etc, and everyone striving to look a little bit more African.
I wonder how first contact between the different races would have been like, both sides must have thought the other was hideous.
Maybe in some alternate dimension, the eurasians are deemed to be ugly if they look more European.

Oo. cool, cool. Maybe its an asian thing? Particularly amongst mothers of eurasians? I once was in the car with this lovely lady who has eurasian kids as well, and on the journey (which took about an hour) i was briefed on the wonders of being eurasian - ranging from how eurasian kids were better looking, more intelligent and also had superior immune systems.
I hadnt the heart to tell her i was eurasian as well and destroy her lovingly-crafted imagination.

It's kind of like in my case with the "all Asians are smart" myth. People would brief me on why Asians are so smart: Is it from your yellow skintone? Is it because your parents beat you for every "B" you get in school? Is it from all that rice you eat? Stereotypes are annoying.

Or rather, do you live around/hang out with Asians? I'm not in Asian, but do hang out with a fair amount of Asians and I've heard about the EA myth within these circles. My non-Asian friends probably have no clue about the myth. Likewise, my Congolese friend says mulattos are so hot. Her sister had a toddler with her white husband and my friend told me they have to be careful about keeping her grounded because mulatto kids are often conceited because they're so often told they're attractive. So fear not, EAs aren't the only ones burdened. I guess the myth manifests itself when you're around the ''non-white'' *cough*lesser*cough* crowd.

^How harsh...but true. Last month I found a little conflict with the Meszitos/Indios and a Mulatto. I found it veeeeeeery interesting. A region of Mexico where all are supposed to be Mexican there is conflict between the diiiiiiferen't castes. Now I know!!! Beautiful.
