I'm not into anime at all, except for Dragonball Z James Marsters, that scrawny dude who was Spike on Buffy and Angel? Aw comon mate, for a start his voice is way too high-pitched to be a convincing Piccolo, and secondly Piccolo's supposed to be tall - he towered over most of the other characters, Marsters is only 5'9" 1/2. Casting him is a mistake in my opinion.

The guy's a good actor, I think he can pull it off. Glad to just see him in something anyways.
And if there's one thing that wouldn't hold that guy back, it's his voice. He's pretty good at manipulating it. He's a singer with some decent range, not to mention that he did a good job sounding like a Brit as Spike.

In the particular case of Dragon Ball... aren't sayains sopposed to be caucasian-like? They start off with black hair and black eyes, then they go super aryan--er super saiyan. ^__^ When you look at some of the characters that are in manga and anime, there are a few that still have a lot of western features, so in regards to those specific characters, I wouldn't mind if a westerner was cast in the role. However, if a character is supposed to be, say Japanese, then by all means, cast someone who is also Japanese. In the end though, you want who is best for the role. Someone who can do the character justice. Whoever that may be.

It's like Vivian Leigh; cast as Scarlett O'hara, even though she was British, and Renee Zellweger cast as Bridget Jones. Or the Chinese actors in Memoirs of a Geisha. Although.....it did sort of bug me that they weren't Japanese now that I think of it. But the whole movie was weird because they were all speaking english. Anyways, sorry for the tangent!

Off topic just a bit but let's all face it... MOST White people neither can nor care to acknowledge any difference that may exist between Japanese and Chinese people. This also pertains to most any Asian ethnicity. And they usually don't distinguish between native born and foreign born Asians either. If we appear Asian we are all expected to bow and speak Chinese... and like to wear kimonos.

Probably because in Vancouver there is such high Asian popluation, and our education system did a lot of multicultural awareness stuff. A lot of the Chinese kids at my school thought all white people looked the same, which I found surprising, but really, it makes sense. What's the word...ethnocentrism? Can't remember. Back to anime......

The same happens overseas in Asia however. If you're white, that means you're American. Same shoe, different foot.

Following the debacle known as The Last Samurai (ya know, the film where the white hero kills some faceless Jap and f**ks his wife), I am amazed that the Jews and whites of Hollywood continue to peddle this sh*t. The Japanese should be pissed at the bastardisation of their cultural icons. But I guess Asia has always been fair game to The Man. The man pillaged my village and raped my pet goat They came on horse back, in the dark of the night. It was horrible, they took all cultural icons and turned it into their own. They turned Hello Kitty into a 8 year old blonde haired white girl who took a liking to Paris Hilton. Oh the shame of it all. Go beat up an old white lady if it makes you feel better.....(i don't condone or acknowledge that beating up old women is a good thing, i just know it's fun).

You know a lot of the time I think with Japanese Anime it is all about the culture of Japan. Japanese deep down have always believed in a "beautiful land," in the west. Probably because of the Buddhist influence and the myths of the "pure land." They have always looked West for holyness.
