I've seen the Smashing Pumpkins, Weezer, No Doubt, Possum Dixon, Stabbing Westward, Fuel, Hum, the Red Hot Chili Peppers, and the Foo Fighters but these guys still impressed me greatly. Check them out. They're called the Underground Blues Division. profile.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=user.viewProfile&friendID=70497146Anyway, who have you seen? I'm always on the lookout for new talent, major and local bands.

^ I had always wanted to see No Doubt. I saw Ozzie hopping and droning away on stage at Ozzfest in '07. ;D That might've been my first typical concert other than a few Thai venues where the male leads were ogling the female background dancers and the Britney Spears, Christina Aguilera & co. gig I volunteered in a food stand at. The two most impressive I've seen would have to be the musical concerts (I call them this because the music was live) of Wicked and Mystere by Cirque du Soleil. My favorite though, would have to be Blast!

Only 17, you like Citizen Kane, and have seen Dino Jr There is hope in the world. Dinosaur Jr were the coolest! They were the only band to fix their own sound check at the festival. The other bands who were playing hide them selves as much as possible.

I've been to a ton of concerts over the years. I used to be quite the Canadian indie band geek - I've seen Sloan (including their worst show ever at the Halifax Pop Explosion back in 1999 where they later apologized for playing such a poor set) and the Dears (including one set where the singer chugged a pint of vodka during the concert and then lay down for about 15 minutes while the band kept playing) many times, and then lesser known acts like the Wooden Stars, Ron Sexsmith, Superfriendz, King Sunshine, Inbreds, Thrush Hermit, Joel Plaskett, North of America, Plumtree, Great Big Sea, the Watchmen, etc. some of which are now defunct unfortunately. Then I've seen a lot of big name acts - I went to the Reading festival (the oldest popular music festival still in existence) in 1998, when there was a famous spat between the Beastie Boys and Prodigy over the song "smack my bitch up." Prodigy came on first and said "the Beastie Boys didn't want to us to play this song but we'll play whatever the f*** we want" and the Beaties then followed up and said "where we're from we don't disrespect women." That festival also had Jimmy Page and Robert Plant, Rancid, the Foo Fighters, Elastica, New Order, Supergrass, the Specials, Roni Size, and lots of other lesser known bands. My first ever rock concert was Def Leppard with Tripping Daisy back in 1996 when they came to Halifax.
I've also seen Snoop Dogg, the Beatnuts, Franz Ferdinand, Interpol, the Killers, the Arcade Fire, Modest Mouse, the Doves, Medeski, Martin and Wood, the Libertines, Silvio Rodriguez (a great Cuban singer-songwriter), Fishbone and Thurston Moore (in an awesome basement club in New York's meatpacking district called "the Cooler").
But the best concerts I've been to are the two Steely Dan Shows I've seen in the last two years (the first with Michael McDonald). Probably because they're my favorite band, but they also have an insanely good band and unlike a lot of rock bands they do different arrangements of their songs and have a significant improvisational component so I feel like their live shows are good value (at about $40 for the two concerts I saw).
I've also seen a whose who of contemporary jazz artists - Arturo Sandoval, Wayne Shorter, Kenny Garrett, Benny Green and Russell Malone, Christian McBride, Bill Frisell, John Scofield, Brad Mehldau, Branford Marsalis, Chucho Valdes, Joey DeFrancesco, Joe Lovano, Joshua Redman , McCoy Tyner, and Lee Konitz.
I'm really psyched to see John McLaughlin and Chick Corea on their upcoming visit to Berkeley and see Yes (minus Jon Anderson) coming to SF!
Anyway, if I was in Canada I'd always be on the lookout for shows by King Sunshine (a great dance band), the Wooden Stars, Joel Plaskett, the Dears, and Peter Elkas.
On my wish list - Radiohead and Wilco. If only Radiohead tickets weren't so expensive and selling out within hours, I hear they are an amazingly good live band!

Mmmh... the first concert I went to was Haggard in 2002, a "classic metal" band from Munich, then I saw them again in Augsburg, Germany and again here in Mexico in 2004.
Some metal bands I've seen: Stratovarius (3 times), Gamma Ray, Iron Maiden, Kreator (2 times), Sodom, Destruction, Therion (3 times), Deicide, Blind Guardian, Edguy (2 times), Satyricon, Tristania, Mayhem, Impaled Nazarene (5 times on the same mexican tour in Mexico City, San Luis Potosí, Saltillo, Tampico and Guadalajara, as a roudie), Twisted Sister, Dio, Dokken, Quiet Rio, Nightwish, Shaaman, Angra, Cannibal Corpse
Some other bands I've seen: Lacrimosa (3 times), Nortec Collective (techno and mexican banda together), Real de Catorce (mexican blues at its best), El Tri (mexican rock), Lila Downs, La Cuca or La QK and GARBAGE!!!!!! I've secretly loved Shirley Manson since I was like 12 years old!
Bands I'd love to see: DDT from Russia, Leningrad Cowboys from Finland, El Haragán y Compañía (mexican urban rock), Los Lagartos (mexican 90's rock)
Haggard (Per Aspera ad Astra):
Sodom (City of God):
El Tri (Triste Canción de Amor):
La Cuca (Señorita cara de pizza):
Quiero estirarle sus cachetes de queso!!!! En su boquita de pimiento yo quiero darle un beso!!!! jajajaja!
Lila Downs (El Feo):

The only Mexican band I've ever seen is Kinky (who are from Monterrey if I'm not mistaken), but I can believe that there are a ton of good bands in Mexico, including Metal. The biggest metal fan I ever met was a kid from Santa Cruz province, Argentina, and he was into a ton of local bands on top of the famous American and European ones. I never got too into metal myself but I certainly respect the devotion of metal fans.

Saw Leif Andsnes Oves (our Norwegian national hero) in concert last November. Was totally star-struck and stalked him after the concert .... told him I wanted to study under him in Oslo. Just a sample of his work: www.youtube.com/watch?v=sL_DT4DRxVA

@stray LOL! Emily - it was a great show in a very big auditorium, so not as intimate as I had expected, in Buenos Aires. He played with a band for over half the songs which was kind of different - I guess his latest album (at the time - 2004) had a bit more of a group feel with more flute and other orchestration. The best part was when he played the classics, like Ojala - every single person in the stadium of 10,000+ on their feet singing all the words. And the Argentines brought the same enthusiasm they bring to singing their soccer anthems to a sappy love song!

I'm more into obscure artists in intimate settings.
Noli Aurillo (who I've mentioned before, I think) is one of my all-time favorite guitarists. He's performs everything: jazz, classical, pop standards, oldies, classic rock, tons of his own transcriptions and improvisations. I managed to attend a solo concert last year in Quezon City. Unfortunately, he hasn't recorded commercially, AFAIK, but people have been uploading stuff of marginal quality to YouTube over the past year, but most of it doesn't really do him justice. This one is bearable in spite of the sh*tty video quality:
Dammit, someone has got to honor this man's legacy properly!
...Anyway, I also caught a Joey Ayala concert at the 70s Bistro in Quezon City, a place which always draws one of the most diverse crowds imaginable: 70s activists, 80s conyo kid rocker/groupies, yuppies, and even European expats and tourists, these days. He's another local legend (much more famous locally than Noli) who falls more into the ethnic folk genre. His music combines very traditional indigenous influences with modern, western folk. He used to perform a lot with his wife, but I've only seen his solo performances. His lyrics draw on themes related to the various social causes in which he is involved in the Philippines.
Again, there are some live samples on YouTube, but the video quality of most of these sucks or doesn't contain any of the real highlights from his oeuvre, so I am including studio recordings -- sorry...
I've always gotten the sense that he is really edgy and a very serious artist -- I really admire that. I've seen interviews with him, but I think that they tend to annoy him (he is still rather polite about it). He's really someone who you must see live in order to fully appreciate.
