...yikes! The stereotypes are true. I had no idea that half filos are white washed and artsy! That probably explains why I am majoring in Advertising with a minor in sculpture. Now I feel like a determinist...sucks.

i think the whole part japanese mixes being all for it has a lot to do with where youre raised. if you grow up around a bunch of white people who think anime and japanese culture is the cats pajamas then you like to say youre japanese. its just like saying you heard of a band before they were cool.
japan just seems like the most glorified of the asian cultures around here with people of my generation.

Hm, and without meaning this to sound racist if possible -- but the Japanese do have a sort of superiority complex over other Asians. Not all of them, of course. But some do. Stereotypes have to start somewhere. I was kind of flabbergasted the amount of times I'd mention going to China or Cambodia and colleagues/students of mine there would wrinkle up their nose and go ".... really? .... why?"

Nah, its pretty simple.. richest and most westernized/modern to poorest and least westernized/modern. In asia, theres really not much more to it. The further south the asian country is, also deducts tons of cred, as well as the percentage of your population who rely on subsistence farming.
Eg..
In order of coolness -
Tokyo Shanghai Hong Kong Singapore Jakarta

Nah, its pretty simple.. richest and most westernized/modern to poorest and least westernized/modern. ^In the case of the Phillipines (at least in Manila), it's funny/conflicting, because there is a significant amount of American influence (particularly in the city), however the poverty is still rife. For what it's worth and from what I have been told, I think the Japanese do tend to look down on Filipinos in a condescending way, although I'd be interested to hear the thoughts of others on this.

LaFace: Honestly, I think a lot of asians looks down on Filipinos. I overheard a chinese girl talking about how a girl was "ugly, you know, filipino." I was sitting with my Filipina/Japanese friend, and I swear to God I was an inch from starting a rumble in the jungle. Filipinos are referred to as the blacks or the mexicans of asia...because they have rhythm?...I guess I was left out! lol

yea but i mean in the lower ones they dont all despise each other but they all hate japan. and theres some weird chains going on. or at least it seems like it. Oh but they do despise each other! The laotians despise the thais, the thais despise the cambodians and the cambodians despise the vietnamese. In fact, the all despise each other.. It just works that way. Even to the point that cambodians will be ok with selling child pornography because the children are laotian and not cambodian. Most south east asians are torn between kissing japanese bum bum for the investment perks (cambodian children are increasingly learning japanese at school instead of english) and hating them because they (and the chinese) just love to exploit all those cheap, resource rich countries closer to the equator Nah, its pretty simple.. richest and most westernized/modern to poorest and least westernized/modern. The phillipines is westernized, but its definatly not westernized on a grand scale. Every large asian city is westernized, with the exception of a few, so that doesnt count for much.. Its how deeply westernization has penetrated in people's daily lives. The fact is that poverty is still rife there puts it lower in the hierarchy of asian countries as well.. If that city is westernized but still has large slums/squatter areas then chances are that it will be looked down upon. Asians are also super racist about skin colour and so the filipinos are looked down upon because of their darker skin tone. I'm so sorry if thats offending to some people, but its just the way it is in asia. The darker your skin colour the less civilised you are thought to be. Its the ugly truth.

Eg.. In order of coolness - Tokyo Shanghai Hong Kong Singapore Jakarta and dont forget HKies HATE the Mainlanders. Haha oooh yes, i live in the new territories when i'm in HK and so i see the way HKers looks at mainlanders on the KCR.. That was just a hierarchy to show that the further south you go in asia, the less 'prominient' the countries and cities are. All the economic activity is concentrated towards the north east.

Jennifer Brook: It is offensive, but it is also true. I am quite pale as is my Filipina mother. In the Philippines as well as Singapore, Japan, etc. there are many skin whiteners etc. Last time I was in the Philippines I was scouted to be a model [like my mom used to be] but I was a little offended by the fact that so many "asian" celebs are either half or have gone through extensive surgery. I think there is something seriously wrong with worshipping an ideal different than the majority of the citizens. Here I was feeling estranged in the US because I wasn't Aryan looking and in the Philippines they do the same thing to their own people. And yes, because of these ideals, there are some serious racism problems in asia. On a lighter note, the girl who said the offensive comment was HIDEOUS! So my friend and I laughed it off. Strangely enough, in the Philippines, the Chinese are disliked and made fun of because they are the "Jews of Asia." Basically they tend to have stellar business skills and get quite rich. There is still a lot of misunderstanding in Asia. It is just a shame that it exists in the United States, which is supposed to be for homogenized culturally.
