Jennifer Brook: It is offensive, but it is also true. I am quite pale as is my Filipina mother. In the Philippines as well as Singapore, Japan, etc. there are many skin whiteners etc. Last time I was in the Philippines I was scouted to be a model [like my mom used to be] but I was a little offended by the fact that so many "asian" celebs are either half or have gone through extensive surgery. I think there is something seriously wrong with worshipping an ideal different than the majority of the citizens. Here I was feeling estranged in the US because I wasn't Aryan looking and in the Philippines they do the same thing to their own people. And yes, because of these ideals, there are some serious racism problems in asia. On a lighter note, the girl who said the offensive comment was HIDEOUS! So my friend and I laughed it off. Strangely enough, in the Philippines, the Chinese are disliked and made fun of because they are the "Jews of Asia." Basically they tend to have stellar business skills and get quite rich. There is still a lot of misunderstanding in Asia. It is just a shame that it exists in the United States, which is supposed to be for homogenized culturally. Sorry .. But at least you know where i'm coming from. Anyone here would think it MADNESS to actually enjoy putting on suntan oil and baking for a good couple hours. Nope, its all about the whitening. You can buy whitening cleansers, moisturizers, toners, exfoliants, serum, masks, overnight creams, eye creams, lip balms.. The list goes on and on. I doubt any of them really work that well to be honest.. They're just exploiting asian insecurity about skin colour for cash and reinforcing the idea that whiter skin is better. Its a blatant way to promote racism too.. But its so accepted that no one thinks of the negative social reprecussions.

^^^No need to apologize. I meant the truth was offensive, not the way you said it.

^Ooooh ok sweet God, dont get me started on the whole - Ohh, well we're looking for some models with that 'pan-asian' look - thing that you constantly get in asia, as an EA. It irritates me. Usually they ask me when no one goodlooking is walking around and they (the model/talent scouters) are getting desperate and start pouncing on any EA they can find because they KNOW that they are more likely to find jobs for them. Yea, theres defintaly a good deal of plastic surgery in asia.. Its so obvious with the malaysian and indonesian stars Siti Nurhaliza Note the bridge of the nose has been done, her skin lightened and her eyes lightened with colour contacts.

On a sidenote: It's actually a pretty good job though, I'll say. She looks natural. Could be the photograph though. I wonder what she looked like before? The only pre-op pic I could find at the moment is under this link www.celebvids.co.uk/tag/siti-nurhaliza/I've seen other pre-op shots of her before, don't know where they are now, but they're most definitely a stark contrast from her current look.

^ +1 Hm, and without meaning this to sound racist if possible -- but the Japanese do have a sort of superiority complex over other Asians. Not all of them, of course. But some do. Stereotypes have to start somewhere. I was kind of flabbergasted the amount of times I'd mention going to China or Cambodia and colleagues/students of mine there would wrinkle up their nose and go ".... really? .... why?" :/ en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Greater_East_Asia_Co-Prosperity_SphereNah, its pretty simple.. richest and most westernized/modern to poorest and least westernized/modern. In asia, theres really not much more to it. The further south the asian country is, also deducts tons of cred, as well as the percentage of your population who rely on subsistence farming. Eg.. In order of coolness - Tokyo Shanghai Hong Kong Singapore Jakarta Whenever I hear these asian/EA rankings, Filipino's invariably end up on the bottom.... which incenses me to no end...... so now I'm always having to interject "Don't forgot about the Laotians!! They rank below us!!!!"

Oh ya! Not only laos, but burma, vietnam, cambodia and bangladesh gotta be ranked below the phillipines too.. i'm skeptical about thailand, i'd say they're on par with the philipines, in terms of development.

^ Don't forget Chinese Vietnamese (and thai-chinese) though rank higher than their native brethren .... but still, that's great news. We're middle of the pack!!

Jenniferbrook: pan-asian, wtf? and i am sure they [model/talent scouts] aren't settling. you have to be superficial in the modeling industry. It is at least a little pick me up, right?

Stray: it is never too late for an EA to model . I am going to push myself to learn tagalog and hopefully get into advertising over there. I would love to help turn the economy around over there! It really is a beautiful place!

i had to look up flowmax. lol what a name. From the flomax tv commercial: Important Safety Information FLOMAX is approved to treat male urinary symptoms due to BPH, also called an enlarged prostate. Only your doctor can tell if you have BPH, not a more serious condition like prostate cancer. Avoid driving or hazardous tasks for 12 hours after your first dose or increase in dose, as a sudden drop in blood pressure may occur, rarely resulting in fainting. If considering cataract surgery, tell your eye surgeon you’ve taken FLOMAX. Common side effects are runny nose, dizziness and decrease in semen.Watching TV, that commercial came on. My friend's 11 year old: "What's semen?" My friend:"..................................................ask your mother."

^Most EAs with Asian fathers secretly believe they are better than those with Asian mothers because of this very stereotype.
