^ I'm convinced Québécois are more passionate about hockey than the rest of Canadians.
A religion, here, I tell you.

I believe it. If they let Quebec have its own international hockey team I'm sure they would have won a few Olympic gold medals and world championships by now. They usually have the best goalies in Canada (Roy, Giguere, and Brodeur come to mind). The strange thing about Quebec is how they are also more passionate about Canadian football (as evidenced by their college football teams, the support for the Alouettes, and the number of Canadian born football players who come out of Quebec versus other provinces). I'm not sure what that's about.

So have any of the Canadians here ever played pond hockey (or backyard hockey)? Some people think it's the hallmark of a "real" Canadian - being Eurasian, I'm curious how many of us would qualify under that standard. Even though neither of my parents is a native Canadian and neither has the least bit of interest in hockey, I can say that I've played pond hockey a few times in my life (maybe a function of growing up in a smaller town rather than an urban metropolis where frozen ponds are scarce). I grew up on the west coast and it was never cold enough for outdoor hockey. Must have been magical living in the prairies or out east in a small-town that eat-lived-breathed that stuff. Aren't you from Sydney Crosby's hometown btw? I think I've become like your parents in that I hate hockey now. i LOVE playing it but just hate being inundated by it where-ever I go in Canada.... I love the fact it unites alot of people... and inspires kids... but it's really caricatured Canadian identity.... and marketers (least imaginative ppl in canada i swear) have jumped all over it to feed us this constant barrage of testocerone laden pick-up truck, Tim Hortons and beer ads that all look the same. I'm not sure whether my disgust stems from the sport itself or the fact I've never popped open a beer and magically found myself in a log cabin in the middle of the wilderness, surrounded by scruffy 27-yr old white dudes in plaid, a token black guy with cap turned backwards high-fiving me, and a stream of hot chicks in halter tops carrying food and more beer into the house. (This might be an EA hang-up we all have) @ emily: I've always wanted to play soccer (was a really good goalkeeper), but it was a boys only team in our hometown and they didn't want me :/ Aw, that's too bad. It can be difficult finding girls to play with, especially as you grow older. Once I hit 16-17, it seems like girls were preoccupied by other things. My senior year in HS, we weren't even enough to form a team, so I ended up practicing with the guys instead. F*ck relationships. Develop yourself and do what you love - that's great that you and thesa still play. Don't knock hockey riots though... some of my fondest memories are getting tear gassed after losing the Stanley Cup finals. I think it's one of those canadian male rites of passage (tho clearly lighting cars on fire and breaking windows is taking it way too far)

Yeah, Sid the kid does us proud. Cole Harbour is a kind of crappy suburb of Halifax, but of course we'll pretend that he's one of us.
Stupid Bears lost to Maryland in the first round. At least I still have a shot at winning my pool.

The AFL (Australian Football League) season starts next week.
Very excited!
I feel as though the following promo is a very good representation of the game, highlighting a number of its aspects:
Thoughts?
edit: one more video
Talk about being lucky...
^Player #32, Peter Bell (the other guy involved in the mid-air contest), is EA (Korean-Anglo). Regarded as one of the best midfielders of the past decade, before retiring last year.

I'm not sure what that's about. I think the reason football has become so popular can at least be partly attributed to the Tanguay family, the wealthy Quebec City-based family. Jacques Tanguay is pretty involved in sports generally speaking, but he's done a lot for Laval's Rouge et Or. He's allowed college football to gain expansion. Tanguay is a mythical figure of Quebec football. There's money being pumped into soccer, but even now, I still think it's more of an "immigrant" sport than one that beckons to your 5th generation Canadian. The Saputo family is working pretty hard at making soccer popular here, but it remains very localised, only in Montreal... where the immigrants are. F*ck relationships. Develop yourself and do what you love - that's great that you and thesa still play. Girls who continue playing sports have understood that the boys like a girl who can handle a ball. Plus, guys taking off their shirts at the end of the match? Yes, please.

^BAHA!!! I'm a Freo supporter but I don't really follow footy that much. I'm more of a soccer nut but that season is over.
Can't really make any predictions right now cause I have'nt been watching much of the Pre-Season matches but if I have to make one it would be Carlton for the premiership this year. I don't know why, its just a feeling I guess :/

Freo supporter hey?
I rate your captain Matthew Pavlich as one of the small handful of best players in the AFL over the last 5 years.
He is an absolute star.
Something like 5x All-Australian honours?
Unlucky about his lack of team success though...
he deserves more in my opinion and hopefully the team can deliver that for him in the near future, because if things remain as they are, then years from now when looking back at the 00's, he is going to be regarded as one of the greatest of this generation, despite never even getting to play in a grand final, let alone preliminary final. This would be unfortunate for him, as he chose to stay loyal to the club, despite being offered millions to play elsewhere.
Fremantle seem cool though - "Freo, heave ho!"
I can't see Carlton being top 4 this year. One man forward line and a lackluster defence, in my opinion.
Who do you go for in soccer? Please don't tell me Liverpool, Arsenal, or Real Madrid.

Yeah Pavlich fan myself and it is a bit of a shame about the team not performing well in the past couple seasons but hey I've been supporting them since they first started back in 95. I've got a soft spot for the underdogs I suppose.
With soccer its me hometown Perth Glory but with the premier league over in england. Yeah its Arsenal and Liverpool for me. Been a gunner since I was sixteen. Barcelona in the spanish league.

The NBA playoffs are here. Yay! Gotta love Yao representin for the Asians, 9 for 9 from the field and 6 for 6 from the line. I guess Kobe is more popular in Asia though...
