People have to stop using the word "awesome" for things that are not, in fact, awesome. People at work use it far too much in an attempt to have "energy" and "pep" and sound like they don't hate their lives and it pisses me off. My passing you a pen is not "awesome." And if it *does* strike AWE into you, then I feel quite sorry for you. English has thousands of wonderful adjectives, let's select the appropriate ones. Oh, I also hate the phrase "to tell the truth." Which just makes me infer that when you *don't* say that phrase, you're always spewing forth lies. It's such a ridiculous phrase which can be simplified by using the word "really" or "honestly." what adjectives would you suggest? my coworkers and i decided that we say awesome way too much but we were struggling to come up with better options. we ultimately decided we should just start using british slang, but it hasn't really happened yet.

^ N. American's seem to like it when we (Brits) use "Brilliant".. I think that's quite an English word.

Sure.
brilliant fantastic amazing sublime wonderful marvelous delightful incredible swell dandy peachy glorious superb magnificent terrific incredible dazzling first rate stellar breathtaking lovely delightful thrilling grand splendid
There are a billion adjectives out there. And I just don't think that very many of them get fair play in day to day life. This is just a pet peeve of mine. I tend to forget and not stick to standard vocabulary sometimes and people give me weird looks. Oh well.

Must be an American thing. People will go, "That's mines!" to mean "that's MINE." Not an expression. Just completely grammatically incorrect. But I hear it ALL the time. I just don't understand why you would say that. It's even longer to say!

Misuse of the words "Literally" and "Ironic". shh, don't tell Alanis. ^ N. American's seem to like it when we (Brits) use "Brilliant".. I think that's quite an English word. maybe it's me,but whenever i hear a fellow Yank use british slang, even chav-type slang, they almost always use it with at least a mild air of smugness that's irritatingly pretentious.especially 'brilliant'. Must be an American thing. People will go, "That's mines!" to mean "that's MINE." Not an expression. Just completely grammatically incorrect. But I hear it ALL the time. I just don't understand why you would say that. It's even longer to say! i hate that too!or when people say things like,'them are cute'.argh.though i need to get off my soapbox because after spending so much time in the country, 'ain't' is creeping into my vocabulary more and more often.i have the weird bad habit in some situations of using poor grammar for emphasis in the same way as swearing

^ i agree, Brilliant, and other Brit slang sounds much better with a Brit accent than when you guys say it! maybe thats why the people who have heard me and my friends talk, flip out and try to imitate and ruins the effect!
I love Splendid, I should use it more - its such an 'upper country-side' type of word, actually one of my clients uses it a lot, together with Marvelous and its very sweet - especially as he's using it to praise my work!!

I can't stand people who go "Fantastic!" everytime something good happens. Reminds me of when I used to work as a sales rep. Bleh!
Ne ways I have a habit of going "Stupid!" everytime I do something well, stupid. People think I'm talking about them =/

Okay, so I like reading craigslist's car and motorcycle ads. My pet peeve is when people spell "brakes" as "breaks". Really? REALLY?! It's not a typo. "Braks" would be a typo. "Breaks" is totally missing the concept. Along with "their", "there" and "they're". I guess I just hate bad spelling.
