^Michael Bay completely ruined the first Transformers on so many levels so scratch that.
Really? Maybe I just really enjoyed the especially loud sound effects in the theatre because I don't value my hearing. Or maybe I had really modest expectations, based on recently watching the original Transformers movie and not expecting the live action version to improve on the hackneyed robot characters, idiotic humans, and pretty stupid plotting. I was a huge transformers fan growing up, but the movie pretty much delivered what I expected (except megatron didn't transform into a tiny gun). At least they didn't bring in that retard Grimlock.

^I didn't like it. Waaaayyy too cheezy and superficial. And I missed the actual acting as both actors seemed to have only one facial expression throughout the whole film.

My ratio of chickflicks to action movies has gone way up in the last few years, but I'm forcing my wife to come to these ones. I've seen enough of Matthew McConaughey's abs to get that.

- Wolverine: Hell yes if it's anything remotely faithful to the original comic..... but knowing the producers/Hollywood (which crave flag waving american protagonists), they'll probably make Wolverine an American and completely gloss over his history with the Canadian military and Alpha Flight. MILD SPOILER ALERTWell, saw Wolverine and sure enough they had Wolverine serving with the US military instead of the Canadian one (called Devil's Brigade), and they made the Weapon X program an American military program instead of a Canadian one..... and they completely botched the ending too..... they tried to graft it onto the previous X-men movies (and have him joining the X-men) where instead he travelled to China/India/Spain (working in intelligence and as a mercenary) and later joined Alpha Flight/Department H, a team of Canadian mutants working under Canada's Ministry of National Defence. I can understand Hollywood wanting to purge alot of the Canadian content, but why on earth graft the Origins movie right to the beginning of the x-men 1 movie? Wolverine's sojourns in Asia and Europe.... and his Department H/Alpha Flight days provide fodder for a bunch of sequels and would have been way more interesting and accurate. There are a bunch of really good "transformers sucks" reviews out there that cover all the points. For me, my disappointments were the following - Couldn't recognize any of the transformers.... their size was farcical....way too many moving pieces and they had ZERO personality..... they also just flew around liike juggernauts destroying each other and laying waste to cities. It was pretty clear Michael Bay said 'screw it' to character development and decided to just blow things up as he usually does. He also completely glossed over the fact each robot had its own particular weapon/strength (like x-men).... which in some cases (e.g., soundwave) was intelligence or (e.g., jazz) charm. When it came to the decepticons in the movie, all i saw were a bunch of spinning wheels, knives, guns, cannons sticking out of each of them.... they all were just roided-up, cold killing machines. Where was Starscream's leadership brilliance and pestering intransigence? Soundwave's crafty reconnaisance or deadly efficiency (he used to finish off Megatron's dirty work or save his ass), bumblebee's ingenuity, Sideswipe/Sunstreaker's bravado, Ironhide's heart? The robots in the movie absolutely suck! - They injected a stupid human story+romance into the movie that became its focus. Human's were marginal/second tier players in the cartoons .... i dont know why they wanted to elevate them to the fore in the movie and delve into their awkward teen romance .... maybe it's because they purged all personality whatsoever from the robots. They weren't even remotely interesting human subjects either.... a boy that wants to get laid and a hot girl? - The plot totally sucked. As I recall, they just destroyed the crap out of each other + office buildings the whole movie. The entire cartoon was about the race to search out and control global energy sources (prescient?) so they could get back to cybertron... it involved alot of reconnaisance, cloak & dagger and coordinated warfare (remember Ravage, Rumble and Frenzy?). Full-on assaults were rare and it was interesting to watch each robot apply it's particular weapon/strength when the time came. The fight scenes in the movie were just in your face blow-em ups. I could go on a while, but will stop there. ^ I wanted to be Soundwave when I grew up. Me too! He ranked a "2" in terms of charisma, but in every other category, he was killer. He was the Decepticons best spy and most deadly mercenary. He also never lost a battle. Who could forget the scene that would ensue when he released a cassette? "Rumble..... eject...... operation........................ tidal wave" Why on earth wouldn't he be a mainstay character in the movie? None of the best robots never got featured in the movie.

Your comments are all fair. I would have liked the movie to be more about robots (and their personalities) and less about humans too. I think there is a fear about featuring too much CGI acting and not enough humans - maybe merited after Star Wars I, but Pixar and others have shown that you actually don't need human leads to show emotion, humor, etc. It would have been funny to have an annoying and whiny Starscream too.
But there was espionage and sabotage with the little decepticon. Granted he didn't get ejected out of a ghetto-blaster, but it actually made more sense for the transformers to be able to change into different objects rather than have them come from some alien planet but have specific car or vehicle forms (maybe I missed the old cartoon episode where they pick their vehicle forms). I also found the human characters in the old cartoon, however small their roles, to be really annoying (of course the show was aimed at 13 year olds, so no hot Megan Fox).
I think they tried to appeal to a wider audience rather than to hard-core transformer fans - as a result, my wife enjoyed the movie despite never owning a toy or having watched an episode of the original show. I think that's a non-trivial issue for any film-maker, and while us "fan boys" will inevitably disappointed at the bastardization of the source material, I'd rather have them make a diluted transformer movie with mainstream appeal than none at all. Just my opinion.
[Some directors succeed much better - though you'll still hear grumbling about Lord of the Rings I think most fans of the books were reasonably satisfied (at least the characters were all the same even if many scenes were cut). The new Star Trek does a reasonably good job of appealing to new viewers (the wife again) and providing us with the familiar characters and in-jokes.]

Voted for Star Trek. Definitely worth the wait - though only found out about it about a week before I saw it. Brilliant though. First rate.
And until I saw this thread, I had no idea GI Joe was being made. Hope they do a good job on that. Scarlett is being played by the green girl in Star Trek. Can't remember her name, and she doesn't do much in Star Trek other than look green. She's gotta pair of knockers though, so she's at least qualified in part to play Scarlett.
I'm with Rob's evaluation of Transformers. Was seriously disappointed with the last effort. The robots are characterless - you can't even recognise them. I didn't even realise the big guy was supposed to be Megatron. I thought he was supposed to be Jetfire. In the cartoons, Jetfire was found frozen in a polar ice-cap, so that just confused me. There's too much emphasis on the human element. We want to see walking talking robots!!
Tried very hard to see Beta's point of veiw. Yup, not gonna be watching Transformers: the 2nd Attempt.
