If you know nothing about AFL, particularly if you're not from Australia, you can take this thread as an opportunity to say that you do have a favourite AFL team, if ever the sport comes up as a topic of conversation Let's start off by looking at the 16 AFL teams' guernseys. Just curious as to which one(s) you like the most, and perhaps dislike the most? Some use traditional Australian styles (stripes or a sash), whilst others use more modern designs. The following numbers correspond to the above guernseys of the teams in the league (in alphabetical order): 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9 10 11 12 13 14 15 16 1 - Adelaide Crows 2 - Brisbane Lions 3 - Carlton Blues 4 - Collingwood Magpies 5 - Essendon Bombers 6 - Fremantle Dockers 7 - Geelong (Cats) 8 - Hawthorn (Hawks) 9 - North Melbourne (Kangaroos) 10 - Melbourne Demons 11 - Port Adelaide (Power) 12 - Richmond Tigers 13 - St Kilda (Saints) 14 - Sydney Swans 15 - West Coast Eagles 16 - Western Bulldogs

You could also say that the game is some what similar to basketball but with a bigger playing field, tougher and in my opinion, alot better.

Sorry, I don't see it. Except for the fact that you have to occasionally "dribble" the ball while running, it seems completely different. If it's hard to see how Yao Ming would dominate the sport, it's probably a different sport altogether (not that LeBron wouldn't destroy all you "tough" aussies). I've always thought it would be interesting to compare the speed and athleticism in American Football versus Rugby and Aussie Rules football, which are more similar than basketball. I suspect that if history had gone differently and African Americans had gone for Rugby or Aussie Rules football instead of American football the US would be a perennial world champion. [They might also have won a World Cup by now if they went into soccer, but that's a different story]

I miss AFL, in Sydney, everyone's into the Rugby, no one cares about the AFL I've lost touch with the AFL community, now I don't even know what's happening. But in any case, favourite teams in the past have to be the West Coast Eagles and Freo Dockers - I grew up in Perth you see Too bad Western Australia hasn't had much success in this sport since the 70s

I think if AFL is being compared to basketball, the similarity being made is probably in terms of the zoning used when the opposition has possession of the ball. In terms of the rules of the game, it's probably a mix of soccer/NFL/rugby (of course there are differences with each one). (not that LeBron wouldn't destroy all you "tough" aussies). This occurred this afternoon, and I'm not going to say anything except, 'no helmets': Now I'm not comparing toughness between sports, but I am saying that in it's own right, AFL requires balls.

How could i possibly respect a league whose jerseys are designed by 5 year olds using MS Paintbrush? Or did you hire the Libyans to design them? Actually, I grew up watching transworld sport ......and they'd always feature essenden and gelong..... and close-ups of the ref doing that little "cuckoo clock score" routine. quite funny!

Another one today:
Didn't like seeing Sewell get knocked out, but the aftermath was enjoyable to see. Campbell Brown getting fired up, Hodge getting stuck into Lloyd, Ryder and Hodge hitting each other, Bateman doing a clothesline on Lloyd, Brown's 'revenge' comments post-match etc etc
I love watching them get fired up!
