Out of recent TV series, I liked Firefly a lot. I like Battlestar, but I can't seem to commit myself to watching it even semi-regularly. I remember watching the original Battlestar Galactica ENDLESSLY. On Hulu, I've had a rediscovery of Buck Rogers. It's horrible, but I can't help but watch episode after episode. A few of my favorites sci-fi movies would have to include: Blade Runner, The Fifth Element (SHUT UP), Alien & Aliens. The Last Starfighter holds a special place in my heart, too. Anyway, yeah, nerds.

I'm afraid Star Wars wins hands down.
The concept behind the original trilogy is so epic that even the God-awful prequels couldn't ruin the fantasy. The Empire Strikes Back is the best movie of the bunch, but Star Wars lives on the strengths of its characters, and the galaxy in which they are set. It's durability goes far beyond a bunch of movies and merchandise.
Everything else (Star Trek etc.) is just a bit of fun.
Phew...was beginning to sweat.
A most honorable mention must be given to Gattacca. What a movie. Oh, and of course the timeless Space Odyssey 2001. If you take away the bit at the beginning with the grunting apes, then it is movie perfection.

Star Wars is definitely the EPIC but after reading/studying DUNE and reading some articles about how George Lucas may have borrowed a lot of his ideas from DUNE, DUNE just might be more epic...
Also, this isn't a movie actually it's a tabletop minatures game and the lore behind it is pretty uber (I believe that word is appropriate here) but Warhammer 40 000 and the Adeptus Astartes (Space Marines) and all that jazz are all UBER UBER EPIC, the games awesome too.

DUNE just might be more epic... Nah, Dune is only semi-serious fun.

Why "Shut UP" about Fifth Element? Cool movie. Buck Rogers is pretty funny, at least the intro movie is. I'd like to see a remake. It's basically Love Boat Superfly in Space. That shinola has potential! ;D I've caught s*** about The Fifth Element from hard core scifi nerds. And I have my own hangups about it; basically the whole thing with the fifth element being...LOVE!? Eff u Luc Besson! I know the whole story builds up to that, but still. *kicks the dirt* Anyway, Leeloo multipass. Buck Rogers really jumped the shark for me when they started doing the Love Boat thing, running their ops off of that space ship. The space vampire episode was goofy, too (fan added the special effects at the end).

Lots of people say that Lucas borrowed heavily from The Hidden Fortress. But honestly, he pulled themes from a lot of different science fiction serials and books from his youth. It was like that thread Stray started awhile back about Coldplay versus Joe Satriani -- how "themes" can often be found in music that haven't been plagiarized, but sound a lot alike. I agree with Paddy. EP5 was the best. Suck it, Ewoks.

I agree with Paddy. EP5 was the best. Suck it, Ewoks. Yup, it's easy to complain about the prequels, but sadly the tone was already set with that ewok bollox.

you know, for some reason,i could just never get into star wars.i know that's kind of blasphemous if you like sci-fi,but it just never held my attention. i would agree with Dune being much better but i've never seen a movie/t.v. movie that i thought did it justice.
so,since most everyone likes Star Trek to some degree, what was everyone's favorite incarnation?

I thought Dune was great - though hasn't dated very well. Thought the cast was good, with Sting at his narcissistic best. Never read the book or played the game, but have always heard the book to be far superior to the movie. Looking forward to a classy re-envisioning.
As for Star Trek - was never really into the series or its off-shoots. Big fan of Jean Luc-Picard though, but have always disliked all the other Next Generation characters. Love Star Trek movies. The early ones were great. I love the one with the bald girl (Star TreK I?). Search for Spock is wicked too.

so,since most everyone likes Star Trek to some degree, what was everyone's favorite incarnation? I liked ST:TNG best. But only when they got about two or three seasons in; kind of around when they changed to the better looking Starfleet uniforms. I never watch Enterprise. Couldn't get into it. Was always sort of waiting for Scott Bakula to "make the leap home". edit: I watched Star Trek: Nemsis last night. It was BOOOORING. "Wrath of Khan" was the best Star Trek movie, IMHO. This is sci-fi heresy, but I never watched Dune nor read any of the books. *waits for the lynch mob*

Well, I really like the Voyage Home, Undiscovered Country and First Contact (my favorite trek movie of all time, including the most recent reboot). Of the series I like TNG the best, especially the Borg episodes - I think Picard was the best actor on any trek, period, and the other cast members have their moments (especially Data and Worf who provide all the comic relief). I got into DS9 too - it is the first and only trek to really have story and character arcs that spanned multiple episodes and seasons, making it more like Battlestar Galactica (maybe Ronald Moore's influence). Rather than having each episode based on a voyage of discovery - some new planet, species, or subspace anomaly, they actually dealt with politics, diplomacy and espionage as some of the main plot drivers. The Federation wasn't just a bunch of boy scouts either.
I like the Star Wars movies but always thought Star Wars was much shallower than Star Trek - basically an adventure or fantasy movie rather than sci-fi, as it didn't deal with many typical sci-fi themes (time travel, artificial intelligence, intervention/non-intervention with more primitive species, different social structures and hierarchies - i.e. space anthropology, etc.). As such, except for the mediocre acting I would tend to rate Episodes 2 and 3 much higher than most hard core Star Wars fans because the action scenes were much better, though the acting and humor does make a decisive difference in favor of the original trilogy.
I like Battlestar a lot because of the great acting and because the show touches on some deep political themes. I'm just working my way through season 4 now. I enjoyed Dune but have never seen the movies or read the sequels. I like a lot of the Phillip K Dick adaptations (Bladerunner, Minority Report) as they tend to touch on the aforementioned sci-fi themes. I've never seen Firefly, Babylon 5, Star Gate (any of the series), etc. so basically just a Star Wars/Star Trek/Battlestar Galactica nerd.

This is sci-fi heresy, but I never watched Dune nor read any of the books. *waits for the lynch mob* boys, get a rope! nah.to be honest,i've never stayed awake all the way through any star wars movie, and i've seen (kind of :S) all six.in terms of heresy i'd be hanging from the tree next to ya. as for star trek,i can't actually decide.all of them had some characters that just got nder my skin and lessened my enjoyment.probably either DSN or TNG though.i liked Voyager but they were too....chipper.and Belana and Harry irked me.Didn't really enjoy Enterprise though for some reason i liked T'pol. Worf is one of my favorite characters because he just remnds me so much of my dad. really, though, after Battlestar,my favorite show would be Dr.Who (the new ones.)they're hilarious,well-written,have the occasional bit of well-placed drama and a conscience.and i had crushes on both David tennant and Chris what's his name as the Dr. ;D

The first Matrix is the ultimate pop philosophy packaged in awesome and innovative action - the greatness of the movie is perhaps best epitomized by the ability to make Keanu Reeves totally watchable. Yeah, I know it was probably based on some Japanese manga/anime thing, but once every blue moon the Hollywood rip-off can be better than the original (see The Departed/Infernal Affairs).
I don't know why "Richard" made the censorship list - I got special dispensation from up on high for my sig. What happens if I say vagina?
