I realize this is a joint decision and it's way off for most of you, but what song would you want played at your wedding reception for the first dance? ... you know, the slow dance between the newlyweds Just curious Me, I'm thinking it starts cheezy (e.g., with Chicago's Just Say You'll Love me)......... and then near the end, it morphs into something fun/ridiculous that gets everyone on the dancefloor and singing along ....... (can't think of one yet!) that would be perfect (for me). What would you guys want?

I agree with the hit-em-up-sweet/cheezy-style... How about
Have you popped the question yet? I feel that deserves a soundtrack as well.
Good luck!

what happened to Jen s israel kamakawiwo s song and sweetfart s post? at Jen s post i was going to agree and add jake shimabokuro s amazingness to that!
that's a song i want to sing before getting married...at a KTV with friends or in a karaoke duo with prince char mee ;D :
i very much enjoy Vonda Shepard s (the singer from the ally mcbeal series) take on classics although i wouldn t mind the dupree s version either but i really like her voice....for the cheesy opening songs...songs that got me tearing up and that i wouldn t mind slow dancing to:
song that i ve been hoping to find that special someone to sing to...at a wedding who knows...:
sometimes i think i found that person but there are moments of desillusion where i wonder, tear up and end up needing to go back to vonda...or in my bitterness, turn to singers like lilly allen & co that i won t mention here...
the transitional slow pop song NEEDED before going into a pop extravaganza and getting everyone on the dance floor:
edit: links not working. fixed.

These would need to feature for the subsequent party dances:
Back to the OP though - being a big R&B fan, so many songs could fit the occasion such that it's hard to give a conclusive answer for the first dance between husband and wife... where to begin?

Northern Sky - Nick Drake edit: How on earth do you post a video that is not from youtube? You can watch it here: www.metacafe.com/watch/1445173/nick_drake_northern_sky/This is the most beautiful love song, lyrically and musically. Haitian Love Song - CocorosieThis song has such lovely lyrics I couldn't find the video for it so here are the poetic lyrics: One. Oceans wept Moutains slept Sidewalks crumbled to ash Your name remains In children's lullabies And your eyes forever in the sky Two. Pull me close Dear i'm tremblin' Hold me tight I'm afraid ot the night Blackness fills the room Your love burns bright Three. Oh summer winds Remind me of your kiss Soft and warm I never want to leave this Four. I never wanted ti say goodbye I'd throw myself to the sea If god promised you're inside We'd float to island paradise And i'd become your bride Five. The countryside looks bare Without you lying in her grass The stream is dry And the crickets silent There's no music in the night I'd become smoke And hide in your cigarette pack Seven. To be a star Tossing light To sparkle in your eyes I'd become an angel And kiss this earth goodbye Eight. Destiny Use to be Just a word to me But heaven sure was right When they said jesus left somethin' behind Nine. Every inch of this body I'd plate in gold for you Even though i ain't go no money I'd do it just to keep you Ten. Your eyes appear In every one of my dreams They glitter and they gleam Like the first time we meet Eleven. The chickens crowed And i knowed your home My spirit ran to greet you Before my feet left the porch And, finally, Cocoon - Bjork. As the video clip is somewhat artistically naked, I thought it should be inappropriate for me to post it. But you can access it on www.dailymotion.com/video/x1772w_bjork-cocoon_fun

Nothern Sky is a beautiful song, though I think the lyrics are far more uplifting than the tune. It seems so introspectively melancholy.
My girl loves this song, Hey There Delilah. It's quite a melancholy tune too, but I think there is a lot of hope in it. I think that's the reason why she loves the song - cos it talks about two people who are apart, but will come together eventually. She pays attention to lyrics. I appreciate the music. Anyway, Hey There Delilah - beautiful song and may well be played at our wedding!

^ I like how the song is all optimistic etc, and the tune is very catchy and emotional, but I think the lyrics aren't that pretty, though the meaning is. If you know what I mean...
Paddy, are you marrying soon?

That makes sense to me, though, that the melody would be a little bittersweet. Two people in love separated by a great distance is both joyous and painful. For another song in that vein, there's a Carole Bayer Sager penned tune called "When I Need You" you might know. It's greatest success was with Leo Sayer in the 70s, but has since been recorded by Celine Dion, Luther Vandross, Rod Stewart, Julio Iglesias, etc. Leo Sayer singing live (without harmony):

Paddy, are you marrying soon? We got engaged a few months ago. Plan to marry but don't have any dates and haven't started organising anything. At least we now have one song on the list! On another note, it must be a sign of the general malaise in EAN that this is the fast moving thread of the moment!

Perfect for slow dancing. I think if you play that at your wedding, your wife is going to bop you on the head (or worse)! But when she left, gone was the glow of Blue velvet But in my heart there'll always be Precious and warm, a memory Through the years And I still can see blue velvet Through my tears(Palaver the prankter strikes again...)
