This could be a fun way to introduce each other to lesser known movies. I'll get it started.
If you liked The Matrix, check out eXistenz and Equilibrium. If you think of The Matrix as on the center of a scale scale with philosophy on one side and action on the other, eXistenz would lead more towards to philosophy side while Equilibrium would lean more towards the action side.

If you liked LA Confidential you will like Chinatown and if you like Chinatown you will like Out of the past (I was disappointed with LA Confidential but you will be rewarded with the latter two recommendations)

Heh... of those 3, I only didn't see LA Confidential. I'd also recommend Touch of Evil and Kiss me Deadly. Also, while they're not as similar as those, I'd recommend Mildred Pierce and Double Indemnity just because they're probably my favorite Film Noirs.

If you liked American Beauty then check out The Ice Storm (dir. by Ang Lee).

One of my favorite films. It has Orson Wells as director and main villain, Charlton Heston (playing a Mexican vice cop) and has cameos from the likes of Buster Keaton and the great Marlene Dietrich.
