I'm doing traditional Taekwondo (Kwon Jae-Hwa style) and I believe there are others doing martial arts, too. As far as watching goes: I'm always torn between admiration and disgust when watching combat sports on TV. When it gets too brutal or bloody I just can't watch it. Which kind of MA are you into?

I enjoy what little I've watched, though the ground game and submissions can get awfully boring and homoerotic. It is a little vicious how they always deliver an extra punch to the head after they have knocked someone out though.

I remember watching UFC 1. It was kind of neat because it wasn't just all MMA fighters. They had all sorts of disciplines represented -- silat, savate, kung fu, karate, TKD, ninjutsu, jujitsu, and so on. Of course, the big brawler types came out on top until curiously, BJJ guy Royce Gracie comes out on top. Considering UFC was pretty much sponsored by Gracie Jiu Jitsu, there was a bit of rumor mongering that it was all set up.
Oh well. It was fun to watch. Best part was when this big, huge dude (fat) got a tooth knocked out by a roundhouse to the head. You could see the tooth fly outta his mouth!
Most of the dudes fighting in UFC look totally juiced. Not saying all of them are, but geez. Those guys are monsters.

I used to never really be into mma. The first few times I saw it I thought it looked like a bunch of crazy rednecks trying to get paid for what they normally do at a pool hall on Saturday nights. From late 2006 I started watching Pride FC, and slowly became more engrossed with it (following Fedor, obviously). I then downloaded the orginial UFC episodes 1-7. Compared to what goes on now, it looked so amateur; rednecks and tough guys getting gassed in 30secs vs. Royce and other Vale Tudo fighters from the streets of Rio. The cardio of 90% of the competitors back then was complete ass. It's like they just decided to try it out on whim. It was also boring because a BJJ fighter could just stay in somebody's guard for like 15mins straight without being forced to go for a submission or at least transition. Nonetheless, I was still impressed by the fact they were no rules besides eye gouging, and fighters had to fight more than one person in a night, even through injuries. Anyway, at this point I watch UFC since Pride is gone, and I'll try to catch the Affliction event in August. Unlike betahat, I'm actually a fan of the ground game and the submission finish. I think you have to really understand what's going on and notice when a fighter is in deep "shinola" (as we use here on EAN now ) while on the ground. To me, seeing a guy going for a RNC while in back mount on the ground is equivalent to watching an offensive team in American Football trying to score while in the opponent's red zone on first down. I still appreciate the knockout. I enjoyed watching Michael Bisping getting ktfo cold in UFC 100. It was probably one of the hardest knockouts I've seen in a while, guy was still out cold for 3-5mins after the fight ended. Also, I always found most so called enthusiasts of mma (or even combat sports for that matter) are really just rednecks drinking beer and booing until they see blood and eventually a knockout. I think enjoying mma is like watching any other sport, you have to understand the strategy and tactics employed so you can appreciate the skill the fighters bring to the table, and be able to spot when a fighter is in danger, which of course is what makes it exciting). Otherwise, it just looks like dry humping, circling and leg kicks. It's like I can't appreciate Rugby. To me it looks like a giant dogpile moving back and forth from one end of the field to the other, but that's simply because I'm ignorant of its rules. As far as training goes, there's loads of martial arts I'd like to study because it just looks fascinating, but right now I'm broke and I need to work on establishing a career. I would also never really go full out into studying a grapple art because I'm too vain and wouldn't want to get cauliflower ear (I know there's headgear). I did do a semester of wrestling and a semester of boxing while in college which I enjoyed.

I watch it on occasion, but I'd prefer watching a bunch of untrained fatsos duking it out in a Wendy's parking lot.

Ever since Pride died, I haven't been following MMA as much. UFC is terrible, with the occasional decent fight here and there. Generally if the fight has former Pride guys, I'll tune in to watch those.. Other than that, I've been watching Sengoku, Dream, and M1 Global. I can see Dream becoming as big as Pride one day, but M1 is definitely the closest thing to it. M1 has the best fighters in the world hands down, Fedor vs Barnett is coming up, and that's going to be real exciting.

I'm still undecided with UFC but there are and have been some great fights. Lyoto Machida is always great to watch with his background in karate etc. that brings that little extra you dont see often in UFC, IMO. @ penguin "I won the 1975 Kumite " Chuck Norris won the Kumite from 1968 to 1976 all won during the 1st round with a round house kick.

Homoerotic...hmmm I think it is in rare cases the extra punch after a KO is meant to really hurt the opponent. I know from experience the adrenaline coursing causes a fighter to really react quickly and remember opportunities happen in split seconds. That is why a good ref is sooo important.

The japs are really exciting..kitoaka, aoki.. Fedor v Barnett will be exciting- your pick? Uncle Hank, I agree with you, it is important to understand the basics in mma to appreciate what is going on. Although I do not train as much as I did, I still enjoy the mental aspect of watching these events. In terms of being vain, i have not had a problem with cauliflower ears although I know it is common, it just depends, I have no problems with my ears. You will develop such a strong core body-not muscles. I am at 65kg and I could over power guys twice my size cause of the core strength i had plus i'm fast.

Definately enjoy watching UFC. I would call it a mild obsession. I check the major mma sites through out the day for "breaking news" like mmajunkie, mmaweekly, sherdog and I check mmamania when I get home since it's blocked at work. I'll PVR the good UFC cards and catch the others on the interweb the day after.
I don't really watch Dream, Affliction and Stikeforce (will for Gina tho) because I consider the UFC to be the most talent rich and they're aggressively trying to get MMA sanctioned in Toronto!!! ... maybe in time for the GSP/Silva superfight...
