I love my mom's "Si yau gai" iono what "Si yau" is called in English. But she told me it was "Si yau"...some kind of Chinese sauce? Well anyways, it is a very popular kind of Cantonese chicken dish. I love her BBQ strip steak and meatballs with peas as well. My dad can only make American fried chicken. His speciality. Very tasty. Once when my mom told him to make fried rice, he almost burnt the kitchen down and we had charred and darkkkkkk fried rice that night lol. What about you? I want to make something too, College bites! No yummy food. Any good ideas? I am starving! Edit: On second thought I dunno if this should be in the culture section or here. It really contains both family and culture lol. If it should be in culture..please go ahead and move it there for me. Thanks!

My mother makes notorious papaya salad, beef salad, and red, green, yellow curries. She has come very close but in the end hasn't opened up a restaurant because she doesn't want to compromise her recipes with cheap substitutions. She could never make a living using the ingredients she likes. Wow... I've never thought about it before but I've never once had a meal prepared by my father. He's saying he never cooks for anyone he's fond of.

as a rule i avoid anything my dad cooks, with the exception of taro in coconut milk because even he can't screw that up.my dad's idea of cooking is putting half an inch of oil in a pan with whatever he means to cook, adding onions and curry powder, and leaving it on high til it burns. my mom's not a great cook, but the one thing she has down pat is chili (con carne for our non american friends).she makes the BEST chili in the world EVAR.two of the things that set it apart are beer and portuguese sausage.i'm drooling just thinking about it.

^ My bf is portuguese/italian-american and he always says how they have a lot of different soups and sausages lol. The menu is always filled with different brews and soups. He thinks a lot of them are weird, but others are tasty. My mom hates putting too much MSG in her cooking. A lot of Asian cooking has so much MSG in it. She only puts like a teeny weeny bit. Most of her food is good. She loves cooking Asian food, but she also makes American food as well. I got my share of cuisine from both worlds while growing up. =)

Haha, right? ;D It's probably the subconscious reason why I never brought boys over for dinner. My parents also hate me with boys. Even though we are just friends. I'd be surprised if my parents didn't poison them with the food if I brought them over. Every single time they see me with a guy, they think I'm dating him. Wow. Creepy.

My daddy can make a good crawfish boil and butter-glazed frog legs. That's how you know he's got family in Louisiana.

I love most of the food my mom cooks, my dad.... not so much.
But off the top of my head my mom makes awesome stuffed zucchini, seafood spaghetti, eggplant parmesan, stir fry, breaded calamari, artichoke salad, the list goes on. She's one of those people who can clear out her fridge and make something tasty.

Heh, could be. I think it's party just years and years of practice. She started cooking for her family when she was 12, so she's had plenty of time to figure out what goes well together. But then again, Italian cooking is pretty straightforward.
Can't say my mom's ever done two different sauces in one night, but that sounds awesome!
