I'm thinking about buying a video game console - X box 360 or PS3 but I'm undecided. Blu-ray seems nice, but I only have 720p tv so I wouldn't get the full effect (yet). Seems like PS3 has caught up a lot to Xbox over time, but it's still more expensive (300 vs 200 for basic Xbox) and doesn't seem to have quite as good a game selection.
Any advice? Seems like there are quite a few gamers on here.

Well if you care about playing online at all, I'd definitely say go with the Xbox. If not, then it really just comes down to the types of games you like. Xbox is better for shooters, PS3 has more exclusive action games like Uncharted, God of War, Ratchet & Clank, Infamous, etc. Even then, most games are available on both systems and have pretty much the same quality. Oh and I think the $200 xbox doesn't have a hard drive, which you'll probably want, so bear that in mind when it comes to price. Also the ps3 has built in wifi and the xbox doesn't. And no I don't work at Gamestop, I'm just a nerd

You guys are lucky enough to live in a place graced by year-round sunshine and you're playing video games, meh leave that treat to us, poor cold climate folks ! I mostly play retro softs, new does not mean necessarily better in the industry.
For me, it all comes down to the games, stuff like design, multimedia features... are just gimmicks compared to them.
The PS3 has more killer-apps exclusives (Metal Gear Solid 4, Little Big Planet, Valkyria Chronicles, GTV) like B said but less games overall to choose from and the 360 has more variety, more titles but of lesser quality.
If you plan to play few games get the PS3, it's a more intense experience if you're into the few AAA titles available on the console but if you play a lot I would advise you to buy the XBOX.

The PS3 is a great Blu-Ray player, and a lot of movies out on BD aren't 1080p anyway (although I think most new releases are). If you are eventually going to drop some cash on a Blu Ray player, you may as well get the PS3 and have a game system also. I've never been much of an XBox/XBox360 fan, but I've played a bunch of games on my friends and a lot of them are fun. If you are hardcore, you'll just buy both. I opted for a Wii and PS3. I play games occasionally now, but I use it more as a DVD/BD player more than anything. Honestly, dropping $50-$60 on a game nowadays isn't that appealing. I'm turning into a fuggin' old fart. OR...you could build yourself a super high end gaming rig running Windows7 and hook it up to your TV. You can justify it's $2000+ price by installing Microsoft Office and QuickBooks on it.

I like my PS3. Plus Shenzhen is right across the border, and with the Bluray copyright code cracked... you know what's up. I watched Public Enemies over the weekend on BD. It's not even just the resolution, but the sound quality. I don't think my sound system could even capture those super low frequency gunshot sounds Michael Mann uses, and it's a pretty decent 5.1.

Just got the PS3 thanks to the input here (and familiarity, as we use to have a PS2 and I like the controller). My research productivity versus GTAIV + FIFA2010 will be one of the more interesting matchups coming up this December. Might be a while before I get a TV that takes advantage of the 1080p resolution for blu-ray and some of the new games, but looks really good so far, and sounds awesome with 5.1 surround sound. I don't know what other games I'll get, but we'll cross that bridge in January if I haven't dropped out of school already

We can turn the ever-so-elusive Nor Cal EAN meeting into a game swap if you want. I have a few games I'm not playing anymore.

It pays to be ambitious, reminds me of my Econ. prof that was elected to the EU Parliament last June , he's Vietnamese.

PS3! The Xbox has inferior graphics, and u have to pay for your online gaming.

No, I disagree. The Graphics on both are identical. You'd be hard pressed to tell the difference. And yes you have to pay for LIVE. But you are also paying for a service that works better. Modern Warfare 2 takes seconds to join and enter a match on XBL, takes minutes on PS3. Not only that, on PSN you'll always end up playing with some 12 year olds who drop the N bomb much to often.
