^LOL believing Jedi Mind Trick is underground shows you don't know much about hip hop nor the scene either. Attending a MC freestyle battle under a bridge because of the rain or playing in an empty bar with 5 drunk dudes at 2 A.M. is underground, selling 100k albums could be considered alternative at best but getting over 2 millions hits on youtube embodies the definition of mainstream. In any case JMT are a good act despite this status.

JMT released all of those albums on an independent label. Getting more exposure on youtube than MTV or radio, isn't the definition of mainstream. It's part of being underground--not owning the channels and the airwaves. Also, JMT started and were members of Army of Pharaohs, a collaborative underground hip hop group. I'm not claiming to be an expert--I told where I stood on the scale--but I will tell you when you are wrong.

^You're contradicting your statement that JMT is underground by claiming they are alternative. Alternative has never equated with underground, being underground is being much more anonymous. Worse, indie/alternative are mainstream these days as marketers have phagocytosed this hype into products, there is no difference anymore.
Vampire Weekend is signed on an indie label XL recordings next thing you know their album is number 1 of the charts, it'd be a bold statement to call it underground. You're thinking like we are in 2005, Youtube has more viewers than MTV, it's an old media conglomerate whose ratings are decreasing at an alarming rate. Youtube is today's MTV thus why it's increasingly polluted by ads in an effort to monetize its influence on viewers/consumers.

I'm going to keep insisting that they're "underground" or "indie" or "alternative" or whatever you want to call it because I've never heard of them. Until they have a TBS sitcom with Tyler Perry I will consider them to be not mainstream. They also seem like they're kind of on the "white" side of the hip hop spectrum, if you know what I'm saying (i.e. the two founding members are white). Do you get as many black points for liking Italian American rappers?
I could be wrong, but it seems like you would get more black points if you listened to hyphy or crunk, or something a little more lowest common denominator. Still, it's got to be worth more points than listening to German electronica, country, or Lenny Kravitz.

I'm not claiming to be an expert--I told where I stood on the scale--but I will tell you when you are wrong. I never understood this sense of false modesty, self-rightneousness and irony so popular on the web. I'll always be more Black than you could ever dream to be, I grew up in an ethnic ghetto, beatboxed, rapped terrible rhymes, practiced b-boying etc. I've been a music buff since I'm a kid, I've played drums in a funk band, partook in emcee battles as a teen. Today, I'm part of the buzzing Montreal electronic music scene, I've been invited as a guest DJ in some pretty big Paris clubs last year, guess what I played in my sets? Mainstream hip hop, same thing for the ipod battles. What I play in art galleries or house parties here is light-years from that, alternative rock, 80's dream or African pop, unsigned electronic acts, obviously they are different audiences. My friends say of me that whenever they see me walking around without my headphones on, they know something is wrong. My ORL doctor diagnosed that at this rate I should be deaf before 40 because of constantly listening to 'banging noise'. The time I devote to searching the net, venues, digging in vinyls forgotten beats that I use in my own tracks incidently including Marvin Gaye or reading music magazines totals at least 7h/day not including actually listening to music so I don't think it is arrogant to say I know what I'm talking about when it comes to the hip hop music scene.

^You tell me I'm wrong, I prove you otherwise that's it.
Back on topic. Most EAs I've met in real life consciously chose to be white-washed whereas the white-washed members of EAN seem to regret being a victim of it. What could explain such a difference?

^You tell me I'm wrong, I prove you I'm right that's it. Anyways, most EAs I've met in real life consciously chose to be white-washed whereas the white-washed members of EAN seem to regret being a victim of it. What could explain such a difference? Maybe they feel exactly the same yet express one thing in person and another with the safety on Internet anonymity/disconnection. Wouldn't be the first time...
