I think the way we relate to this notion has changed over the years. Children are in my opinion more mature at a young age (earlier sexual experiences, financial independance etc like they were in the 18th century before notions such as adolescence or juvenile protection even existed) while young adults, middle-aged and senior folks have never been in the following order as immature, youthful and active as they are now.
It feels like everyone wants to be 20 years old and to remain at that age forever. Any thoughts?

In general I don't think kids are more mature these days. I think it is the same as it has always been, just that nowadays innocence is lost earlier, like it was (as you mentioned) before laws were in place to protect the young. There are always kids who grow faster beyond their years and there are always kids who are more mature than many adults (I believe that this is environment more than genetic for this condition.)
Much of the time a young person lacks the experience (personal or conditioned) to make appropriate decisions, where an elderly adult in the same decision can make the correct decision.
To remain youthful all your life (20yo forever) has always been the 'dream' in some way or another - the fountain of youth, the holy grail, immortality, etc. I think the goal that everybody wants is to be 20 years old AND retain the knowledge of the life after 20 years old - ie. "If I knew then what I know now..."

You're right about children losing their innocence earlier rather than being more mature, it's useless to try yelling in front of a nursery school that Santa Claus does not exist. However, I stick with my conviction that it's the first time in History, adults try to act younger than they really are, either by refusing to age gracefully, by shrugging off their responsibilities or by being more intellectually/professionally active.

Oh Adults acting younger than they are is just natural I guess! Sorry, I was focusing on kids trying to be older rather than adults trying to be younger!
I will go into old age kicking and screaming and I will make sure my offspring hear of it (and the wonderful stories of 'Back in my day...')
