Did your appearance affect your relationship with your family? How did looking mixed, more Asian or more Caucasian influenced your relationship with them?

I have a couple other ethnic mixed cousins with whom I have a great relationship but it sometimes feel awkward to be in the middle of full-blooded Caucasians and Asians etc and to think we're all part of the same family.

Sometimes I felt my monoracial relatives felt more awkward about identifying with their multiracial family members.

^Yes, that too, especially in social settings like restaurants. Mentalities regarding race and family still have a long way to go...

My white grandmother used to say my Chinese father would eat me and my brother if my mother left us alone with him, but other than that I don't feel it has affected many things. Both my white and Asian family members never showed any signs of feeling awkward about me or my brother. I guess I'm quite lucky.

These days when seeing my family again, I felt as if I'm adopted or something. I'm the only one in the family looking like I do and being the way that I am. I'm even different from the EAs in my family (niece and nephew). Most people can right away tell that I'm my mother's daughter, but we still look like we come from different countries. When people meet me, they expect that my parents look the same way I do, not that one is white and one is brown, while I am yellow...

Did your appearance affect your relationship with your family? How did looking mixed, more Asian or more Caucasian influenced your relationship with them? yup...compared to my sibling i m the more "asian" looking one and that surely didn t help my relationship with the white side of my family... funny because just a couple hours ago this indonesian buddy of mine sent me a very random facebook message that basically read: "i was going through pictures and ended up on your sibling s pic: your sibling looks almost full caucasian while you look asian..." i don t think i look full asian and i would say that growing up i ve been looking more caucasian but since coming here, i ve been included in the indonesian and malaysian group...i m mixed with neither but they really consider me one of them...whenever they talk about cultural differences (even with east asia!) my malaysian and indonesian friends (they don t even know each other!) will say "we"...in a sense that is inclusive of me, hand gesture included... i m mostly mixed with east asian but all my east asian friends think i m FULL south east asian...either indonesian/malay/thai (which i ve gotten a lot from koreans). got completely off topic here...urrr...
