^I think its way off topic now. Cigarettes are one form of pollution, but you are now turning it into a petroleum argument. The reason Cigarettes are being discussed is because its the topic of your thread!
Smoking literally stinks. It gets in your hair, breath and clothes with a disgusting odour. It will be a good day when smoking is illegal in public and private establishments that are open to the public. I hate walking down a sidewalk and there has been a smoker 10meters in front of me who is also walking with his smoke drifting back to us (and everybody else behind him.) You wouldn't like it if you were subject to some guys greasy-runny farts for 3mins as he walked in front of you right?
Why should I have a meal with friends in the nice sunshine only to be spoilt by the smoker who passes by or who also lights up at the restaurant. The same 'smoking allowed outside' restaurant may lose the smokers business when they have to stop people from lighting up outside, but they will certainly gain my business when that happens.
Not to mention the number of tossers who leave their butts on the ground or just around the base of the bin. Smoking was advertised widely in the baby boomers generation, but in our generation and beyond, it is portrayed as bad though all the anti-smoking adverts. This is why we are seeing a shift in anti-smoking more and more now.

Let's face it, smoking is probably going to be one of those things that is going to be around forever. As much as I don't want the environment to be hurt, I have to be realistic. My dad used to smoke but as a young girl, my sister and I convinced him to stop smoking because it hurts his health and we both hate the smell. And he did.
In an ideal world, there would be no smokers, no druggies, no heavy drinkers, and no use of guns, but we don't live in an ideal, perfect world. So as long as they aren't doing it in front of my face and me or my family members don't become second-hand smokers, then I'm fine with it. But if my future teenage son decides to smoke, I too, would at least try to convince him to stop like I did to my dad as a little girl.
And calling someone an ass right off the bat for their opinion/preference is rough. You, as much as everyone else is entitled to an opinion.

Honestly tbw, I don't understand how the debate turned to carbon either. The same for you people with your bitter whining about how you can buy factory made products that are killing our environment, polluting our air, and consequently endangering all of us. Oh my god, Ganbare, your actions are going to lead to my premature death! Don't you feel ashamed? Get the stick out of your ass, no one is blameless when it comes to the deterioration of our planet or our species. According to statistics smoking is more likely to lead you to premature death than industrial/agricultural air pollution, realism and facts are more eloquent.

Not a smoker yet, but I might start once I'm old enough to (legally) drink my troubles away. Still, I'll avoid smoking indoors (to include in vehicles) and I'll try not to put my cigarettes out on cool people.
No s*** though, I don't mind smokers so long as it's not in my house or vehicle.

and I'll try not to put my cigarettes out on cool people. It's also generally advised to avoid putting out tobacco products on Terminators.

Everybody needs a vice. And you have to put things into perspective, walking behind somebody for 5 minutes who's smoking a cigg won't give you cancer. It might be different if you smoke at home daily with children around, but really, it's not hard to step outside.
I enjoy smoking, but I'm not addicted. I'll smoke a pack across a week, or my pipe, and then not touch them for a month. I actually get enjoyment out of it, but I"m not blowing smoke in somebody's face while I do it. I don't make it a habit, and I can afford to enjoy really nice smokes that don't actually stink things up.

Excuse me, I notice you've been taking in my second-hand smoke. Well, seeing as I pay 4 dollars for a pack of these, just give me 2 and we'll call it even.
Mmm, perspective

But really, when it comes down to it, smoking...it's bad for you sure, but not that much. There's very little in this world that isn't bad for you. At what degree should we start banning things? Warning ... I'm a public health person. Smoking is one of THE only things that affects so many people at once when you smoke. Do you know that the first time that someone breathes in is enough to make them sick? You have first degree smoking, second degree, and third degree. No matter what part you're at, it's dangerous. It's scary how many people are affected by cigarette smoke even though they're not directly nearby. At least other carcinogens can be avoided by moving away from the area since they're stirred up by dust. Unlike smoking. The risks of other things affecting a person pales in consideration to how much health risk is in being around cigarette smoke. Also, other forms of pollution are actually much more regulated and watched than cigarette smoke is.

Can you hear it? The delightful sound of an impudent poster getting gangbanged by a horde of silverback apes.

In One Eyes defense, I'm not sure that outside of having a smoker in the house or spending time in smoke-filled bars, the carcinogenic effects of second hand smoke (and now we're talking about walking behind someone walking down the street or standing 10 feet away in a park) are worse than the effects of air pollution. For example: www.cancer.org/docroot/nws/content/nws_1_1x_air_pollution_linked_to_deaths_from_lung_cancer.aspAnd while smoking is more of a scourge in developing countries, air pollution is also more of a problem there. My two days in Mexico city gave me black mucus lining my nostrils, which can't be good. Never mind all the crap they are pumping out in China. I don't think you can argue that air pollution is more regulated than cigarette smoke in developing countries, and there's also a lot less you can do about it around here. You can walk away from a smoker, but other than moving cities there's nothing you can do about living in LA or another highly polluted city. In sum, I agree about the desirability of reducing smoking, taxing and controlling it, etc. as a matter of public policy, but the danger posed by second hand smoke to you does not merit prohibition of other people's freedoms, and you need to CONVINCE me - not just state - that second hand smoke (outside of the home and bars - otherwise we should throw in indoor air pollution from stoves and asbestos, major causes of cancer world-wide) is a worse carcinogen than air pollution (to make it fair let's say in Seattle and not Mexico City, Bangkok, Santiago, etc.)

My Doctor tried to scare me out of smoking. My doc, he showed me a picture of a smoker's lung. Oh, it was gross and disgusting! Then he showed me a picture of a, ah, healthy guy's lung. Oh, it was gross and disgusting! That's why they put them on the inside. You don't have to look at them all the time. You know? -Norm MacDonald.

Everybody needs a vice. And you have to put things into perspective, walking behind somebody for 5 minutes who's smoking a cigg won't give you cancer. This is where I disagree with you. People do not need a vice, it is always a choice. Walking behind someone who is smoking *may not* give me cancer, but their actions are still impacting on me and the others who walk behind them as well. We can't always cross the road or simply not walk behind them. They subjecting us to unfiltered second-hand smoke against others will. In a public place (enclosed or not) it is a common curtosey to not impact others in such a way. Just like people do not take dumps on packed trains.

"I know something that you non-smokers don't know. Ready? Non-smokers die everyday. [...] If only you had smoked, we would have the technology to save you. It's you people who die from nothing that are really screwed."-- Bill Hicks Says the guy who died from cancer!
