I wish I could because I'm sick. I feel like crap Just my luck to come down with something on Christmas Eve. This is gonna be the worst Christmas ever. Sorry to hear that. I merely meant that you should come up with some kind of countermeme to justify getting rid of your deadweight coworker.

Haplotype's biostatistics field looks cool. He analyzes death statistics and analyzes them, etc. Making all these graphics on excel. Don't you use PCR to diagnose AIDS? We have a test for HIV pro-viral DNA but the preferred method for diagnosing HIV infection is serology (testing for antibodies to the virus since there is no vaccine the only way an adult would have antibodies is if they've been exposed). AIDS occurs when your CD4 (a type of white blood cell) count is below a certain level or you develop certain diseases. We do test for PCP pneumonia that often occurs in AIDS and other immuno-compromised patients. We reserve testing for HIV pro-viral DNA for newborns where the mother is HIV positive. This is because a mother may pass on her HIV antibodies to the newborn and not the actual virus. PCR is useful in detecting whether the virus has been passed on to the baby since it tests for the presence of HIV not antibodies.

Sorry to hear that. I merely meant that you should come up with some kind of countermeme to justify getting rid of your deadweight coworker. Thanks jewbird. Any ideas? I'm pretty sure she's aware of the unfairness of the situation since she seems pretty astute. I don't think she's aware that none of us actually want her here though since we're all polite (since she is really a guest, sorta). She actually goes along to co-workers parties even though the only reason the invitation is open is because they don't want to be rude.

It's not about what you do; it's about who you know. Sad, but true. Sometimes. Very true in certain industries - networking can work wonders. I believe networking is important but being extremely knowledgable and educated in your field along with hard work is a must to be truly successful. If you want an eloquent example of this, read the play titled Death of a Salesman.

I would have quarterly evaluations of staff performance using metrics where she trails her peers and use that as the criterion for making staff reductions when budget limitations require it.

VLR: sounds like a tough situation
Perhaps if there are enough colleagues that feel the same way as you, detail all the mistakes she makes and when there are enough, present them with a united front saying that her lack of ability is making your jobs untenable professionally. Stress there is no person animosity, just too many mistakes and an unprofessional situation. When in doubt, hide in the crowd!
On the general topic, i worked with my family's business so it was the worst sort of nepotism. However, when hiring accounting grads, we found that university educated applicants were equally as ineptly prepared for doing the job they were "qualified" in. Perhaps an inability to think clearly for oneself is symptomatic of being an accountant. But anyway, it's shaped my thinking and i'm not a large believer in qualifications for some jobs. Most of the business type qualifications are rubbish in my opinion. Success in business is more about common sense and learning from experience.
Actually my sister works at goldman sachs, used to work at ML. Both have programs for referring family members for jobs....so guess I guess i'll give it a whirl at some stage....i'm not complaining!

I have to reiterate my own plan as the advantage is that the hand of God remains unseen and it comes across as cold and impersonal bureaucracy.

The ghost of Baron Vladimir Harkonnen smiles upon Sam's plan. I still haven't read Dune but I think I'll get it with the book voucher I got for Christmas, thanks for the reminder! My seniors have been keeping a list of her mistakes since they're kinda stuck with what to do with her. Unfortunately with this being public sector it's really hard to do anything. It would be good to use a reduced budget as an excuse but she's still being paid out of Forensic's budget. That would change though if she was ever given a permanent position here, so that angle could work...

Congrats, Xandra! Good luck, Joy. Thanks, Celtriya! I'm pretty excited about it, and still shocked that I managed to get a job the same day I finished school.

I recently got hired to this job where I'll be tutoring kids, in math and english/reading subjects. While I do have the qualifications and experience for it(I've done my share of tutoring both officially and unofficially since highschool), I imagine there were plenty other qualified applicants as well, and I would've had less of a chance to have gotten it had it not been for a referral from a family friend of mine, who works for that company. When the supervisor/manager called me to set up an interview, it was pretty much presumed that I was hired- "We'll do a brief interview and start training you right after that... we went thru your resume, and liked what we saw. Also, the fact that ___ strongly recommended you to us, we're big on referrals. She's one of our best tutors."
Even though this job isn't directly related to my field of study, I think it would help having it under my belt for future purposes. But yea, in my case, it was a combination of both having the qualifications for the job and the connections to back it up.
