im guessings tht its from the ancient days in asia tht the people in china/japan/korea/maby siam and vietnam that when they traveled south thy thought of the darker philipinos/malays as primitive people and assoiated dark skin with low class i think that every culture (xcept for guidos) in the world think lighter skin is beautiful

I think dark SE Asians often have bigger complexes with skin color than NE Asians, because it's much harder for them to achieve lighter skin than it is for NE Asians. It's not just about staying away from the sun, since their skin is already naturally tanned even without any exposure to sunlight. In the Philippines, those who are very dark are often looked down upon and assosiated with the tribal people from the mountains. Over there, skin color is definitely a sign of which class a person belongs to. Even if a person is rich, while being dark skinned, to society he doesn't really 'look' rich, unless he can get some lightening skin treatment (which everyone expects he should be able to afford) to look more 'presentable'.

I don't know if SE Asians have it any worse than NE Asians. All these lightening creams and bleaching crap is sold outta China, SK, and Japan, so clearly people out there have their brain hung up on this crap too. While I'd like to say it's not any different or more harmless than these white chicks that go tanning, the fact is it does differ. There is a deeper history to Asians' desire to be light than white people's longing for tan skin. I've never heard of white people discriminating and looking down on another white person for being pale. Tanning, although people have made it so fake today, has always been natural by working hard outside and staying in the sun. But there has never been a healthy, natural, and effective way to lighten skin. I try not to always accuse Asian girls of wanting to look white but I've gotta admit, it's hard for me not to think that there isn't an inferiority complex present when these girls get eyelid surgery and invest in this skin bleaching junk. I have no problems with taking measures for your own vanity to satisfy yourself, but when you are mutilating your body like that you have other things that need to be fixed (not physical).

I can't lie I was shocked when I first saw those skin bleaching commercials. I think one of them even showed a lady with darker skinned lady getting turned down from a job interview, then she slathers on the bleach and all of a sudden she gets the job and a man lol.

Yeah of course all of Asia is mad about it ^^ What I meant was, generally NE Asians are naturally lighter skinned, and most of the time the darker SE Asians can only dream about having that type of lighter skin tone.

I cant believe that advertisement:P
I got teased by my white friends for being so pale! They were always more tanned than me:/ In the western world being pale is kind of ugly.... Dont know why, but I associate pale and chubby together. Or I mean I feel fatter when Im more pale for some reason. Dont know if this is true or not.

Yeah it sounds American because it's a Filipino commercial... Commercials there are usually either in American English or in Taglish. I sometimes wonder if they are the ones sounding really American in the commercials, or if they get some American to do the narrating, lol... catgirl: I know what you mean! ^^ In Norway it's kind of like "tanned = slim and pretty, pale = chubby and unattractive"... And my brother also used to tease me before about being paler than my niece and nephew (he's the only Filipino guy I know who likes tanning in the summer). Here in Singapore I see many people, both men and women, who are paler than me (which doesn't make me as color conscious as when I'm in the Philippines and everyone points out the color of my skin). Here it seems more than acceptable to show off pale legs in short shorts...

Oh that's weird, I didn't know they air commercials in English in the Phils. I know Filipinos tend to be better at English and use it more than the other Asian countries, so that makes sense. But yeah, that is definitely an American narrating that commercial.

There's a long standing tradition of lighter skin on females being more desirable as a laborer will be tanned from the sun, but pale skin was a sign of wealth status and luxury. Added on to that, Aryans have tended to conquer a lot of darker skinned people in general over history and well...the conqueror sets the bar for values, and typically being that of lighter skin. I think India is a good example where they were invaded centuries ago by Aryans coming out of Europe and the middle east. Their caste system heavily favoured the light skinned descendants of those conquerors, or so my theory goes.

I think it's just a trend. When Asians say they prefer pale skin and want pale skin, they're not thinking: "oh, I want pale skin because I will look more weathy because of the farmers and shiz" They just have grown up with everyone saying around them: pale skin is better.

I have no problems with taking measures for your own vanity to satisfy yourself, but when you are mutilating your body like that you have other things that need to be fixed (not physical). generally, not generalize, but people who generally use skin lighting skin are from lower socioeconomic and with a darker tan. South East Asia has it just as bad, ifnot even worse, their complexes is even larger. In south east countries e.g. Philppines it's not just about been light skinned, but there is also a deep complex merely being light skin. But they are also trying to achieve to be Cauasian, this is so set deep into their mentality that it has turned into an ideology. Their "goal" is to wipe/hide their asian heritage, this is another level in what they strive to achieve. What Philppines idealize is to be Caucasian looking but with a "filipino" culture. This is just one of the common mentality in the Philppines but of course it doesn't apply to everyone, but it's a inferior complex that has been passed down for generation. So that is pretty missed up. Not saying all filipinos don't have pride, but alot of filipinos have what has been termed "blind pride". What they say always contridicts with their prideful comments in being Filipino....funny, it's always seems to be double standard to everything they say. This is just an example. NE Asians have another level of inferiority complex, but I'll write about that another time.
