Being the youngest of three, by the time my parents had gotten to me they were too tired to discipline young, rambunctious children... physically. I was never spanked, caned, beat, shot, stabbed et al. But I never did anything to deserve any of those either as I was the model obedient, conscientious (and wussy) child.
Instead of physical punishments they'd resort to complex mind games that would guilt me into doing the 'right thing' and has turned me into a cynical, suspicious creature. If I wasn't keen on doing something my mom would glare at me, give me a huffy 'FINE. WELL DON'T DO ME ANY FAVORS' and then ignore me for however long it took. I'd end up feeling bad enough to cave at the end. Complex reverse psychology can work on children. My dad, having the red-hot-Irish temper, would just yell and rage like the irrational crazoid he is.
Locking your child out of the house is quite possibly one of the cruelest things I've ever heard of. Supposedly my dad did that to my eldest sister growing up as well. If anything ever happened to said child during those few hours - I doubt the parent would ever be able to forgive themselves.

When I did something wrong (and sometimes even if I didn't) I'd get locked in a trunk with a rabid rat. My mother told me that if I was good and pure at heart that I wouldn't get infected with rabies myself, and that if I was naughty and bad at heart that she'd have me shot. Okay, that's a mild dramatization...
