Im a bit intruiged about this as in another thread it was said "you get a big leap in salaries in Asia around the 4th or 5th year mark". After quizzing people involved it sounded like a massive salary premium to someone in the West, particularly after tax.
I find this extremely hard to believe. For as long as I can remember in almost any industry Asian salaries are lower. At any level.
There are a range of reasons for this but in my own industry of IT its simply due to a surfeit of cheap Indian and Chinese labour.
To achieve anything like Western salaries you have to provide something they cannot get locally. This either means there is a creative slant to what you do, or there is a management aspect to what you do, or your work is so highly technically specialised no one in Asia actually knows how to do it.
Id like to hear peoples experiences in this.

locals can get paid highly too. at least that's what i'm telling myself come promotion day.
I can't find the backup, but i've been told, particularly Big4 / other multinational companies, bottom ranks get paid like sh*t compared to other countries at same level/job.. but once near manager levels, the pay surpasses the other countries.. prob helps with the much lower tax rate / standard of living costs.
unless its another myth to prevent (lazy) me from looking for another job...
BTW, my frd was telling me how IT (high level / consultancy) in India is being outsourced, because the rates for high level local Indian workers are too high, and companies are turning to Europe/US to hire ppl to work in India!! You should research that!

These so called high levels of Indian salaries are still lower than what anyone would make in the West at an equivalent level. Ever.
The reason they are looking elsewhere is they are not as cheap as before. There are probably some Chileans/Ethiopians/Afghanis/Vietnamese/insert your race here who can work cheaper.
No matter how cheap someone is willing to do something, you can always find someone somewhere in the world willing to do it cheaper.
The simple fact is high salaries do not exist in Asia when compared to their Western equivalent and I really want to challenge this assumption (not just from yourself but from others) that there is this so called salary leap for locals the further you get on in your career.
I just dont think it exists.

It could just be that after 4-5 years of working for a company they get more of a 'bonus' each year (could be one off or a reward of some sort.) This incentive (if cash) would only be proportional to the cost of living for that country though. So what maybe a huge pay-rise there may not be so in the west. So while a bonus of maybe a grand in Australia may be average, a grand in India can go a long way.
Though I have never heard of a higher salary after a few year (like a significant jump.)

Dude (Krez) stop being so obsessed with money.. and you're the one who does actually have a comfortable amount of it. Who cares where earns more, or if its 'impossible' for asian countries to earn more than western countries. What matters is where/if you can enjoy the money. Far more depressed and unhappy people out in the west, no?

If having money doesn't make you happy, give it to me. The impression I get is that being an employee in Asia always pays worse than slavery unless you're an expat on assignment. Entrepreneurs, however, can do extremely well and I think are more likely to succeed than in the United States because of the dynamic, growing consumer market. In the United States, there's no market for anything except telecommunications recording equipment and depleted uranium shells.

There is no nobility or happiness in poverty. Unless of course if it is poverty by choice (i.e. making some type of religious vow, etc.).

You should research that! How surprisingly ironic! If that's really true, I'm glad, in a way, because that helps break the image of Asian professionals "cheap".

In general, I really think that salries are lower in Asia because the living costs are generally lower and wages are kept artifically lower to attract both domestic and foreign customers in the crowded, cut-throat, competitive, Asian markets. Whereas, in the West, living costs are generally higher because of the opposite. Also, I think the Westerners just have this superiority complex that they must somehow get higher salaries compared to their non-Western counterparts, even if they aren't any more productive or better, only because they are Weterners in "developed" West. They won't say it, of course, but it's so obvious it doesn't need to be: overrated and overpaid (white) Westerners in equal opportunity, colorblind, democratic West.
