Cinghalese. Every kitchen aide is from Sri Lanka in ANY restaurant of this planet; So you gotta be able to talk with them in order to get some free food!

German and Chinese (mandarin probably) are at the top of my list. Spanish would be up there too but I already know it (well somewhat, like 4 yrs of highschool).

I read in the LA Daily News a few months ago that many foreigners coming to LA are now learing spanish and korean rather than english, I think it's because they are the largest groups immigrating to the LA area and they've established their communities and businesses.
I basically agree that Spanish and Chinese (and Korean) are the new important languages to learn, especially in CA. I studied French for 3 yrs. in HS and I have never had a reason to use it outside of school. I'm currently studying Japanese at my college right now (I think we're the only community college in the valley offering a Japanese course) and I feel I have a better chance of using it outside of the classroom. Though I'll admit the majority of the class (a class consisting of about 50 students) are only taking it because they like anime, I think only 4 people are taking it for business purposes and 6 are Japanese-Americans trying to learn their parent(s) language.
