Term in ex-Spanish colonies to refer to a "mixed-blood" Euro / native. Spelled mestizo in spanish, but mestiso in Filipino. Mestizos in Mexico are the majority and refers to Euro/Amerindian. Mestisos in the Philippines originally referred to the semi-hispanicized Spanish / Malay person, but now refers to anyone who is part local (ie, Malay) descent with a significant amount of non-local (Spanish, Euro, "American" or even Chinese) descent.

hmm...I could've saved myself all those paragraphs... Since The Philippines is a former Spanish colony, their genetic makeup is likely similar to that of Latinos (I'm sure we all agree Latinos are mixed...). Yeah, Filipinos are like the Latinos of Asia (though it's more complicated and iffy than that). If you look at the language, besides Spanish and native American words, you also have Chinese (eg, susi (key), tokwa (hard tofu), tahu (soft tofu), bihun (mee foon -- rice vermicellis), petsai (bok choy), siopao (roast pork bun). North American English (eg, okra -- which originally came from African dialects, comfort room -- no longer commonly used in North America) Sanskrit and arabic words (let me look them up). Also the English word boondock is from Tagalog (bundok - 'mountain') -- in the boondocks -- picked up from WWII. It is funny that the slang in English for that is "boonies". I found an article in wikipedia showing a list of loan words in the tagalog language... and there are some nahuatl words, that even when they "travelled" to the Philippines via spanish, those words were used among indians and mestizos (during the colonial period)... Sakate (Nahuatl: zacatl) Meaning: grass Tsokolate (Nahuatl: xocolatl) Meaning: chocolate (the most widespread nahuatl word) Tatay (Nahuatl: tatl) Meaning: father (mexican spanish doesn't have that nahuatl word) en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tagalog_loanwordsI dunno if all the info there is completely right.... but it makes to my eyes the philippine society one of the richest and more multicultural I know (in this case barely know, I've to find more resources about it)
