I want to set the record straight.
FOSTERS is NOT Australian for beer.
Any Aussie will tell you it is Australian for sh*thouse pissweak crap, that the world seems to think we like to drink. I cannot for the life of me figure out how they get the cats to sit on the bottles. I wouldn't take one if I was dying of thirst and on fire.
After talking to other foreigners, it appears lots of people around the world are fooled by marketing into thinking that certain products represent quality in the country they come from.
I've heard Belgians bemused at why Stella Artois is so popular etc....
Talk about stereotypes. Now if you excuse me, I have a crocodile to wrestle and a 5.30 kangaroo to catch.
Anyone else....?

"American" does NOT mean "White person".
I cannot stand it when people assume Americans are White. This is an insult to people in the US who are NOT European (yes, people who are full Asian or full Black can be American too!!!!!!!!!!!!). And it's not like people are "half American" or "full American" because "American" is NOT AN ETHNICITY. I hate it when people say something like "are you half American?"
SHUT UP!!!!
I mean, when people see someone from the US who's not White, they think, "oh he's Black" or "oh, an Asian girl" or "hey! A Mexican". But when they see a WHITE person, then they think "AMERICAN"
AAARRRGGGHHH
And there are White people OUTSIDE of the US too. i.e. Europe, Australia/NZ.

Khaki shorts and shirts are *not* the national dress of Australia. You'd think we're the only ones keeping King Gee in business.

@ Cristobal & TeeHee: But that's been the reality ever since this country was founded by the wonderful, superior European settlers.

Is this a thread about "icons" or stereotypes? Seems the latter.
On that note, seems like another good stereotype making the rounds today is the one about americans being loud, racist, ignorant, and hell-bent on war: the catch-all scapegoat for the world's ills.
I was just about to mention the stereotype of all germans being emotionless pedophiles with no sense of humour and clad in whips, chains and speedos.............. but having thought about that one, it's actually true.

^The US today is actually 70% or 80% White (yes, according to the last Census, America is still very very European ) and full Asians are like 3% of the population. Nevertheless, "American" is NOT an ethnicity and it's annoying when people act like it is; I noticed some EAN members do that (and NONE of them are from the US) *starts getting angry again* (Ok just go back to my last post). EDIT: oops, that was for EA Observer

Nevertheless, "American" is NOT an ethnicity and it's annoying when people act like it is; I noticed some EAN members do that (and NONE of them are from the US) *starts getting angry again* (Ok just go back to my last post). When i went on exchange in Italy, I remember arriving at the school gym in Milan. There we were.... 20 guys from Canada lined up against the wall with 20 Italian families on the other side... both waiting to be matched up in eager anticipation. Half the canadian guys were chinese and I remember the look of muted disappointment on the Italian families who were paired with them. I felt bad for the guys, but at the same time, I could kinda understand the expectation on the part of Italians. They could read latin and quote Dante by heart, but they knew jack sh*t about Canada and were expecting a bunch of whitebread lumberjacks. Same thing when I went on exchange in Japan. That time, more than half my group was Indian. Same thing happened. The Japanese were extremely welcoming, but you could see the disappointment in their eyes as if to say "what the hell are all these brown people doing here from Canada? I thought we were gonna get white people". No one ever uttered a word about race until the last day when finally one gentlemen asked me politely if there are alot of Indian people in Canada? "Yes Miyamoto-san. Vancouver has the largest Indian population outside of India". And then it all became so clear to him. He laughed and smiled, and I knew I had satisfied more than just a curiousity. At the end of both exchanges, needless to say both hosts and guests learned a ton. And most importantly, we learned that while the older generation had massive pre-conceived notions about Canadians, young Italian and Japanese girls really didnt care much And being eurasian? Don't get me started!

But I still wish people knew that America is diverse. Slightly related...when my brother's wife was in high school there was a foreign exchange student from Denmark. And when some of the Filipino kids started telling him about their country, he said that he's never HEARD of The Philippines (lol "never heard"?!?!). Then he went on to say that he's only heard of China. It seemed ignorant at first, but then I thought, "how many people in The Philippines have heard of Denmark?"

A lot of people are really disappoined when coming to Norway just to find out that we do not have polar bears walking down the main street of Oslo. Some also seem to think that because today's black metal originated from Norway and the Scandinavian countries, we are all goths and listen to Darkthrone, Satyricon etc. all the time...
