that s amazing!!! i m in awe!!!!! first off, you look a lot like your mum as i thought this was you. and then...HOW did you do that? how do you know where to use what shade of beige on what part of the face? how did you make that without following a pattern on the fabric but a picture on the side instead?
or did you make the pattern?
how? did you draw your mum on the cross stitch fabric and then colour it with pencils to know what shades you ll be using and where?
i m seriously in awe. finding the colours to match the pattern you made (if you even made one or just cross stitched on a blank fabric!!!) and make the change to different shades so smoothly!!! how did you know?you must be such a good drawer to be able to do that! you should try painting!
and Alex, those ornaments are so simple yet so stylish! wonderful idea! i bet they d sell really well if they were made out of plexiglass! i know i d want plenty around my room!

Thanks Rob and ahliang They took me a few hours to do, but if I had access to a paper cutter (remember the ones from school?) it would have been a lot faster and the strips of paper probably would have been straighter, too. They would be cool in plexiglass! But I haven't the foggiest idea how one would go about that. If anyone's interested, I got the instructions from here, and improvised a bit for length/etc: www.designspongeonline.com/2007/11/diy-wednesdays-modern-paper-ornaments.html

Most people say I look like my mom I did not draw or color the cross-stitch fabric, but did it all on blank fabric. That's not to say I didn't have it organized a certain way though, as I went through a long process of observation, figuring out and coordinating the details into a color scheme of sorts and making a chart/map for myself as a guide. For example, I would assign a certain letter/character to each and every shade I had and when I put together the chart/map, I'd have all the shades organized by marking their corresponding letters on this map. My background in art helped a lot too; I've done both drawing and painting, though more so of drawing than the latter. Painting can be fun too, though things would get pretty messy for the times I did it. I guess you could say that's part of what draws me more towards needlework, it's cleaner

You look so much like her! I'm sure you could make some good pocket change by selling custom cross stitchings, if you ever wanted to. As part of my Christmas present my friend got me an old-fashioned potholder loom! I ran out of loops within a day of receiving the present, so I have to find more soon. The one on the left reminded my friend of Nintendo:

It's been suggested a number of times that I could make some money from selling custom cross-stitchings as well as other crafts that I do. While it's certainly not a bad idea, as I mentioned about before, my schedule is busy/changing and I somehow feel like I'd be doing potential customers a disservice if they're paying me for it and I can't really guarantee when I'd be done with their piece. I might do so later on, but at the moment, whatever pieces I do, I'm just keeping it amongst close friends and family. I remember those pot-holders! I use to make tons of them back in the day. I'm feeling nostalgic now looking back on it.

Alex! i like those! especially the one in the upper left! the way some of the colours show seems pretty random...as in...not all in a straight line if you know what i mean... is there any way you could organise the colours so that it would look like a tetrix game!?

I'd never used one of those looms before, but the loops definitely took me back. I have a feeling everyone I know will be getting potholders from now on. ahliang: that is a great idea, but not sure I could execute. But maybe with the right colours and planning... Speaking of Nintendo-related crafts. I was part of another secret santa where the limit was $5 and people were encouraged to make something for the recipient. Well, somebody made me this awesome mario kleenex box holder! I still can't get over how awesome it is. Ok, I'll stop hogging this thread now.

and I plan to sort of build a portfolio with one-of-a-kind personalized pieces of work. I just began my next piece of needlework, and they'll be getting it too when I'm done an update on that second piece I just completed, it's of Vietmunda/Sam
