I guess it is because you said "You can ignore your racial heritage, try to ride that line,", I didn't realize that they were 2 separate options, so I assumed that you would try to identify with neither. I did not understand that there was another choice, trying to identify with both.
I don't think it is a superior choice. But for me, identifying with one or the other is routinely denied to me. Ignoring racial heritage is only available in places where others are doing the same.

I want to put the older ang lee movie "pushing hands" out there. It's not explicitly EA but covers a lot of cultural strains that come up.

Search for ver van familie. A story about Indo girl named Barbie who returned to Netherlands to reunite with her long-separated extended family. This film is one of the most "eurasian" movie I've ever watched. The protagonist, Barbie was born of problematic family. His father was transvestite (result of sexual abuse during japanese camp) and her mother died due accident. This movie features a lot prominent dutch-indonesian culture atmosphere. I could empathize Barbie's cultural alienation when meeting with her dutch-indonesian family. She grew up without love, while her indo family mostly were very warm. I really suggest you to watch this movie. however it's not really family movie though, there are several themes such as overuse of tobacco (barbie actually smokes in the screen a lot of time), homosexuality (two naked guys having kiss and sex). This movie really special for me because a dutch man send it to me as gift after I wrote how much I want to watch it in my blog. The ending was also touching and might ended make you crying.
