Hey, why do we have these sexist, racist, degrading ads on our forum site?  Somebody please help support me on this, let's get them banned. I mean, they're degrading because those poor women have had their dignity taken away from them, they must be like mail-order brides or something. And what is so degrading is that their height and weight are listed... like that's important. They have a number but no name - so objectified! I thought EAN was meant to be a place free of racism and bigotry from the rest of society? These ads are not only degrading for women, like myself, but degrading for people of part Asian heritage, like myself. Is it just me or do these sort of ads make you sick? |

I've wondered about that too. I always got the "Filipino women looking for mates" something like that add showing up. At least that was when I was traveling and didn't have Ad Block Plus in stalled on my FF. It removes all the banners from your browser freeing up space and saving your sanity. adblockplus.org/en/ |

^ That's cool, but we can't just close our eyes. I don't think EAN can specifically choose what ads it displays, but maybe we can do something to get the bans removed altogether.. from.. everywhere.  |

I usually block ads, so this is the first time that I've actually seen these particular ones. Are these for a dating service or long-distance matchmaking?
Either way, I'll be the dissenting voice here. I don't see how this is necessarily degrading. I have no issue with the general concept of these services nor the specific depictions in the ads here... Now, if someone told me that this particular service was engaged in some particularly onerous, immoral or even illegal activity, then yeah, I'd lodge a protest. Also, if someone can present a cogent argument for why this particular service undermines the objectives and spirit of this board, then I (the folks responsible for this board, likely more so) would love to hear it.
Oh, and I'm all for getting rid of all banner ads, but there's "no free lunch" in this world, I'm afraid...

These women are so objectified. A number instead of a name - they might as well be prisoners. From a woman's perspective (and an Asian one at that) these make me sick, I just don't think they're appropriate for EAN. We have a more enlightened attitude here, don't we? Plus, shallow perverted hedonistic people really give a stuff about their height and weight? Degraded to meat.
They're degrading. That's why I object to them most.

This is actually an interesting discussion. Unfortunately its pure economics. I draw parallels with sweatshop workers and the people who protest about that. A lot of people decry the poor conditions in there but do you really think that they would be working in a sweatshop if they didnt have to? They do so because the alternative is far worse, tilling in a field for 14 hours a day is a lot harder than sitting in a factory making Nikes for 14 hours a day. Thats not to say its right or should be encouraged, but the point is they are willing to do it. The same applies here. Yes these women are objectified and if they had any money they probably wouldnt be on those sites in the first place, having said that no one forces them and just like a sweatshop worker they are seeking a better life for themselves. If thats via some lonely old white guy then so be it. There are worse fates in this world. I dont want to come off as supporting this kind of thing, but unfortunately it does boil down to economics, it would be a better day for all of us if no one had to do such things. Unfortunately these are the realities of this world. Would you object to these women wanting a better life for themselves? |

I think proboards has no control over the ads. Google's adsense actually reads thru the threads and places ads according to the thread and/or website contents.
It's just the strange fact that most paid ads connected to the keywords 'asian' and 'multi-racial' are dating sites.
... Google "asian" and see how high up asian dating sites rank up. It's #3 when i checked, just below the wikipedia entry.
.. but Google any other continental ethnicity (European, African, Australian, South American)... you don't see a dating site within the first page at all.
