I was just a bit curious about the outcome of having asian mums or asian dads in the child. Is there any difference here when it comes to integration of the asian culture? Is it easier for children of asian mums to learn the asian language? What about your asian identity? Do you feel more in contact with that of your mum or your dad? Which group do you feel more comfortable or have more in common with? Is there any relationship between having an asian mum or dad and looking asian or european/ or whatever ethnicity your non-asian parent has? I myself never got the chance to learn Vietnamese (my dad is vietnamese), and my mum was more in charge of teaching us her language, so I was wondering how this is with other eurasians.

Asian Dad/White Mom - I think I inherited more European facial features through my mom's side. In fact I often get a surprised look when I tell people I'm half Chinese, though EAs and those in the know can usually spot it immediately. I'm pretty sure genetics is about 50/50 so I don't think the way the mix goes should really influence how you look, it's just chance that gave me more of a Euro-look. My younger brother is a bit more Asian looking.
Culturally, and I suspect this is the case with many EAs, my Asian side was already pretty anglicized - my dad grew in between Singapore, Burma, and Canada but spoke English with a British accent and had major affinities for European cultural (particularly British modern poets). Today he can barely speak Chinese anymore. To the extent that he has a major affinity it is culinary, and though he doesn't cook Chinese or Burmese cuisine my grandma does. As a result, beyond Chinese New Year, an affinity for food laden with garlic and chili, a fondness for kung fu movies (even the cheesy bad ones) and occasional contact with Asian relatives in Singapore/Burma there really is not a strong influence of Asian "culture" from my Dad. Conversely, while my Dad was quite Anglicized, my mom has an abiding interest in Asian culture from her studies and current career - speaks fluent indonesian and spent a large part of her life in SE Asia. Growing up in Canada (and in the smaller city of Halifax), not learning chinese, and even being able to pass for white inevitably meant I would take on a "white" identity.
My suspicion is that frequently, the very forces that bring a white/asian couple together tend to make their cultural differences smaller, which may make it irrelevant which side is on the mother/fathers. But since I relate to both my parents equally, I am perhaps not the best judge of whether it matters which side is which.

I was just a bit curious about the outcome of having asian mums or asian dads in the child. Me, too. My mother said that this other EA chick would be physically stronger than me and that I "could not compete" because she has a white mother...

Basically, Eugenie* will always be taller than me because her mum is white. Apparently.

He grew up in a colonly of britain singing God Save the Queen every morning at school. He claims to speak no chinese but he does know some hakka which he never taught to my sis and me. He didnt live in an asian country. But he was all about moving to Canada. Married a german woman but insists on eating rice everyday. Rice is pretty good I gotta admit.

The odd thing is my dad is more into Indian food than Chinese, which I suspect is a byproduct of spending some formative years in Singapore and Burma which tend to have a lot of spicy curries. My dad also speaks rusty Hokkien which occasionally leads to confusion when he attempts to use it at cantonese restaurants.
This thing about being taller/stronger due to a white mom is strange. It seems like a twisted reversal of the medieval belief that male sperm was a "homonculus" or little man and contained all of the life essence while the mother's egg was just a receptacle or incubator. I thought genetic material was about 50/50, though I guess there are some genes that are only attached to certain chromosomes so they are only passed on through one side. I suspect the main difference is really attitude and not genetics, since girls/boys sometimes identify more with one parent, and it may influence one's attitude towards either part of one's genetic heritage. Like Phil I like the idea of the Asian dad/White mom, if only because it is rarer (don't know the ratio, about 3 or 4 to 1?) than the other combination and reverses the typical cultural sexual stereotypes (you all know what I'm talking about - the black-white-yellow "sexual" hierarchy and associated frequency of interracial male/female couples). But I'm not sure if this affects people's attitudes systematically - it would be interesting to know if there were any large enough studies of this.

It's complete bull - don't worry, just because Eugenie has a white mother is not the reason she is taller. She's taller because that's how the genetic dice (determined from her parents - BOTH OF THEM) chose to roll.

I know that its pretty much just 50/50 on looks and stuff like that. But arent there some traits that just go through mum or dad for example like mitochondria from mothers, and that nearly only men are colour blind or bleeders? I read in some article that usually people inherit their figures and forms from mum and height from dad or something like that. I also think its an odd thing to say that the EA with white mother would be stronger

I feel more connected to my white dad. I don't think it's necessarily due to race. I get along with my ma's Asian family. I just don't connect with her. Any psychotic behavior I may occasionally have is probably due to her. I'm very calm (which is the opposite of her) but when I'm angered (it takes a lot to anger me but very little to anger her) I'm a scary hot-tempered woman. But I scare people when angered because it's so rare. It gives me headaches and dries my mouth. I was raised in the States so I'm comfortable around 'white-washed' people. My dad is from NYC so I learned more Asian culture from him than my mom. My maternal grandma exposed me some to her Asian culture. My mom is more 'American white' than me. Aside from rice, I didn't grow up with Asian food except the occasional Chinese restaurant (which ALL American races do) and some of my grandma's cooking. Then as a teen we started eating at the new Thai and Viet restaurants. Rice was the only 'Asian' dish on our Thanksgiving table. I didn't discover more of my Asian heritage until I was 18. The reason for that being in university people assumed I would know this. I felt 'obligated' to identify Asian so I learned more about the food, some history, and costumes. In a way it was a good learning experience but again I did it because I was labeled in college and felt obligated to become that label. So it's great I learned more about my heritage but the reasoning behind it is unfortunate. I didn't learn any Asian languages and have no desire to learn any but if I wake up morning speaking a few Asian languages, I would be so happy. ;D Both my parents shared the same religion. I'm glad they had that in common. If anything my parents influenced my culture more through religion than ethnicity. I'm not religious but the religion I grew up is my culture. I don't think having an Asian mom or Asian dad will make you look more or less Asian. Sometimes one favors mom, other times Dad, sometimes both or neither. "I didn't discover more of my Asian heritage until I was 18. The reason for that being in university people assumed I would know this. I felt 'obligated' to identify Asian so I learned more about the food, some history, and costumes. In a way it was a good learning experience but again I did it because I was labeled in college and felt obligated to become that label. So it's great I learned more about my heritage but the reasoning behind it is unfortunate." I feel the exact same way, so I actually majored in something off-the-wall and dropped out, but at least I went to a top Jesuit college. What you experienced will change the world because that is obviously totally wrong.-------------------- (My race is my signature right now.) Sometimes, my dad is more Asian because he sometimes says he's almost 100% Irish, and my mom is 100% Chinese from Indonesia, or also called Chinese-Indonesian. They migrated concerning trade about 500 years ago, from different parts of China to Indonesia. I don't know enough of my exact family history, yet, though.. Her family is from the capitol.. I am not really sexual at all in the European way concerning how I feel, but I definitely didn't ever feel at all Asian. I just feel like a blank slate with my desires. I always thought you could make yourself be like your dad or your mother if they are "different" racially, rembering no race can be inferior to another in the end. If they are "the same" racially, usually you will always be like both in some ways. Consider, one bad and one good, you'll want to be sexy like the bad one yet good like the good one.. It holds you can be like anything you have as an ethnicity from any side, regardless of what is inherited. I am not like either of my parents like at all. I am not really like anyone else I know, either. People have always called me to my annoyance Miss Perfect. No one on here really says they claim to be just white Asian or European? I wonder if anyone on here is Russian heritage or has blond hair. I have a lot of blond in my hair. I really just like all of the cultures. I guess I am Euroblasian, if that's alright, and "white." Anyway, I always just am and say I am just white European completely the most and in my desires. It's unheard of to call a Eurasian less white than anyone unless maybe it were another Asian. I was born with non-black hair, but I got a tan and with it darker hair. My brother grew light brown hair, but then it got dark brown with getting a tan. We lived in the south in the U.S. My brother never really acts European. He just assumes he already is, but he's always quiet. He's 4 1/2 years younger. He's more like my mom. Everyone says I am like my dad. I use my parents more for their age because my mom was born around 1960 and my dad in 1950. I follow my mom more in this way and consider her all white as a race. My dad really makes life interesting, however, and I follow him in most of his ways. He is very white for a white person and has blue eyes and black hair.

My Mum is Burmese, 'she speaks English surprisingly well' I am told by people. She should since she came to Australia when she was 17. To me she always spoke well. I guess sometimes it's a bit insulting, but whatever. I never really learned Burmese from my Mum, there was no real necessity to speak it, I do however regret that I never learned it. I can understand a few words. People can easily discriminate a white man and his asian wife, even if they met as co-workers in the bank and not on a Thai sex tour or were purchased off the internet. Everyone always seems to have this preconception that my parents met in some exotic location and such. I love seeing the disappointment on their faces when I tell them, 'Oh yeah, they both worked in the bank. He liked her and asked her out. She said yes and the rest is history.' They're like, '....Oh...'
;D

how could you major in something you dropped out of? which jesuit college? -------------------- The program got worse after I joined. I went to Loyola University, which is in New Orleans, L.A., Chicago, and Baltimore, Maryland. You have to apply separately for each one. I went to the one in New Orleans because it was the 6th highest ranked (academically, etc.) in that quarter of the US and of course the highest Catholic ranked. I was surprised I got accepted so easily everywhere. I should have gone to Rhodes..How is your dad more asian if he's white? His choice to marry Asian. The Irish's excuse that they are Asian in nature, regarding the Irish-Americans.can you elaborate on the sexual natures of asian vs. european. since you strive to be celtic would it not make sense to strive to be sexual in the celtic way? I consider Celtic my <3 Indonesian is kind of cool imo, I suppose, since black is such a big thing nowaday. People make the mistake that Asian is something delicate.why is the bad parent sexy? is that your white dad who acts asian 100% of the time?
