Although I look like a horse's ass, I find that when I run far enough on the treadmill, there's a certain type of girl (besides the blind ones) that would actually give me a double take. In fact, the girls that "like me" seem to share exactly the same inherent facial characteristics (e.g., bone structure, size of eyes, distance between eyes to nose, shape of forehead etc) as opposed to acquired/controllable ones (e.g., hairstyle, make-up, fitness). Girls that don't have these characteristics don't give me the time of day..... not at least until I spike their drinks or stuff cash into their bras.
So, I'm beginning to think that this stuff is all genetic and that for each of us there is a "matching pair" of facial patterns that set us off and for which we're genetically programmed to do the nasty with. These physical characteristics don't appear to be "beautiful" to others and exogenous factors like fitness and personality only obfuscate matters and introduce variability.
There's always been talk of a singular/converged set of beauty standards, patterns that most of us instinctively find attractive..... but I'm beginning to buy into a highly distributed theory of attraction.... one based equally in genetics/pre-conditioned attraction, but in the form of "matching pairs".
Am I smoking dope? Has anyone noticed this in the people they attract or are attracted to? I'll bet that these matching-pair characteristics speak to compatible personality traits as well.

I was attracted to a bald man with an Arafat nose. I don't know. Ah yes, that's the Telly Savalas / General Rastapopolous complex We should compare your structure to theirs to identify the "matching pair"

I suppose this makes a fair amount of sense, as we have relatively large portions of our brain devoted to facial recognition. It may be important in determining genetic compatibility or general genetic health (or so I've heard from various TV shows).

Yeah, I've noticed that quite a few couples look kind of similar/share some traits. Ty and Jak are a good example.

I've been told by multiple people that most of the girls that I date(regardless of ethnicity) look the same.

Hmm, I must be an exception to the "rule"...My man and I look nothing alike...And even though guys I've attracted/been attracted to in the past ranged from much lighter to darker and everywhere in between, none of them looked anything like me either.

Let me clarify: I'm not talking about being attracted to someone with the same facial characteristics as yourself. it's about certain ppl being attracted to certain facial characteristics and vice versa. Lock and key. Lock and key.

^ I remember having the same conversation with a friend of mine and between us all the answer was still up in the air. But I think there may be some truth to that. If people are innately appeal to the facial features of babies for the sake of a babies' survival and protection, then something similar can sure be said of facial recognition/attractiveness and a life partner. And I think someone on EAN had once posted a mapping of the human face based on a study focused on attractiveness, but that was ages ago. I also think there may be features we're all attracted to as a society which may be a result of some survival instinct. For example, a big ass can suggest fertility in a woman and this is something men are attracted to. In terms of one's facial features, I think big lips would appeal to society, though I can't explain what that would suggest for survival. And you do NOT look like a horse's ass. LOL. You're HAWT. It's in our EA genetic make-up, anyways.

Wow... What a complicated subject (and interesting). To be honest, I'm so soft I can the see the beauty in almost anyone. I love everything about women. Heh. But the ones that really make me look twice have something in the eyes -- some kind of glassy, glowing nature about them...But something cool, edgy, and dangerous too. Can't explain it. These are the girls that both scare me and make me feel like a million bucks at the same time (God, I sound corny). That said, there are some noticeable differences besides that in girls with that quality. Some have been blondes, some brunettes, etc.. The other day though, I was watching that movie the Rules of Attraction (which is great btw) with one of my friends... She told me that she thought that actress Shannyn Sossamon was a lot like me, but female. Even if I don't totally agree, I guess I'm inclined to agree with her anyways -- I'd jump on Shannyn Sossamon in a split second. Haha As for controllable factors, well... This is funny. There's this girl I think I'm falling for, but she's kind of "country" (which I do like, but not so much in the extreme). I've had my hair for awhile now looking a little crazy like Sid Vicious ( image), and she had hair going down to her behind. The other day I got my hair cut a little clean cut though, and then she had cut all of that hair into a kind of long kind of bob, with a spiky pony tail sticking out from the back. It was funny... When we looked at each other, we were like... "Uh..." It was like we were trying to adjust ourselves for each other or something. Now she's me, and I'm her. [edit] Oh, and yes, this new girl does kind of resemble me. There's the eyes as I mentioned, but something about my cheeks, and my smile.. Kind of a crease, but not dimples. She's got the same features. Both of us have ovalish faces, similar lips, and the same chins. It's strange.

And you think you know what someone looks like better than themselves? If they say they look like a horse's ass, then they look like a horse's ass. End of story. Actually, you probably see yourself less than you see other people all day long, unless you are looking at a mirror or pictures of yourself a lot. I don't think we can ever see ourselves objectively. A lot of how I view myself (both physically and personality-wise) depends on how I'm feeling at that moment.

@ Strive: I agree with Alphamikefoxtrot and I also think that we can be more critical of our own appearance than the way others perceive us.
And we are so getting off topic.

Not sure of it fits, but people always say that those relationships last, where the partners look alike.I think it's got to do with finding something familiar (maybe cozy) in another person, so that you feel more at ease with them? Sometimes it's also possible to match certain facial features to characteristic traits, so maybe unconsciously, we choose people that are of the same 'characteristic' made as us?
With smell, it really is a genetic story: the olfactory system is coupled to the immune system which can then screen possible partners for genetic compatibilityand then send signals to the brain...
Gonna stop now, I sound way to geeky...
