neon genesis evanglion - it is so good i love asuka and misato lol shinji annoys the hell out of me tho. ok, can somebody tell me what exactly happened in the last two episodes cos the yreally dont m,ake any sense :s
If you can't interpret the last 2 episodes of Evangelion, the whole series is worthless IMHO.
Everyone interprets it differently, I found the series to be quite deep and meaningful.
The way I saw it was;
Rei Ayanami was actually a clone, housed inside of her was the soul of Gendo Ikari's wife who died (Yui Ikari). Although she does not know she is Yui and has none of her memories, see is still essentially Yui Ikari. Hence why Shinji has a "connection" with her, it's actually the love he has for his mother.
Everytime Rei dies, Gendo moves her to another body/vessel.
Edit: One thing I got wrong here is that Yui's soul is actually absorbed inside Eva Unit 01 (Shinj's Eva). That's why Unit 01 always protects Shinji, it's his mom. (He reaches a sync ratio of over 400%!!!) - Also, Rei is still a clone, composed of Yui's DNA.
The EVA's are actually genetically modified humans, and as such are sort of a life-form.
The "Angels" coming down to Earth and trying to destroy everyone is God's punishment for Gendo, who has broken alot of moral rules and is essentially playing "God".
If the "Angels" win, they don't actually kill everyone, however everyone gets turned into "liquid air" type stuff, which is where every soul becomes "one". A higher plane of existence and unity, but obviously not desirable by mankind.
Shinji is the polar opposite of his father, if that counts for anything. Perhaps why he was spared?
The orange shield that every Eva uses, and Adam uses, is actually the strength of ones "Soul". The more at "one" one is with themself, the stronger their shield. Shinji has no confidence in himself and is always torn, that's why his shield is always broken through. But ultimately he turns out to be a very strong person.
I think the scene where Shinji crushes Kaoru in his hand is very memorable. Shinji in many ways had to make the ultimate sacrifice, he had to kill a friend, he had to kill another human being and take with that all the burden and guilt/sorrow of killing someone else, all to save humanity. And during this tough decision, all he had to do was close his hand.
When I watched Evangelion I was quite young, so I'm not sure how much of it I actually "got". I'm gonna check it out on Wiki and see what some things meant, I think I am even gonna go back and watch the whole series again.
Oh yeah, watching the movies that came out after the series, like "Rebirth" brings whole new concepts to the mix and is sort of independent of the series anyway.
Edit: After checking Wiki, Nerv is trying to force human evolution forward, so that all humans become one unified entity.
Gendo is trying to do his own plans, whereby he can modify this "forced evolution" so that he can be together with his wife, and he doesn't care if he steps on humanity during the process.
Shinji is always afraid of being hurt and as such cuts hiimself off from everyone else, but during the time he learns that even if we get hurt we have to keep moving forward, trying again, giving people another chance, as this is the only true evolution of mankind.
