holy sh*te! you guys are crazy! that's awesome you can know so many different languages. me i'm only fluent in English, but i can make a little convo in Polish, Ojibwe, Tagalog and french. Yaaaay, someone who can understand two of my languages! Anyway, my mother tongues are: Ojibwe and Tagalog, but I'm more fluent in English and French. I can also understand Japanese (spoken) and Spanish (written). I'm trying to become more fluent in my parents' languages though. Tagalog's awesome! my co-workers teach me everyday but wen speak it to filipinas and filipinos that dont know me they always laugh haha. and Ojibwe has definitely gotta be the most usefull first nations language here in canada, but it's real tough to learn if your parents never spoke it to you.

Tagalog is pretty fun! They probably laugh because they don't expect it. I speak a more regionalized version of it though from the provinces. Ojibwe has been really handy and I've been learning it on my own for four years. I can even understand good chunks of Cree because of it (which surprised me because I wasn't expecting to understand Plains Cree...my dialect is closer to Mashkigoo Cree). I'm interested in seeing how much Innu I can understand.

I guess we need a definition of mother language - is it the language spoken at home as a child, or the language you tend to think in, or the language of the dominant culture where you grew up? For some of us it is not easy to answer.

chineseeyes - have you ever wondered why they are insisting that chinese should be your mother tongue? It is presumptuous of them to do so, and I wonder if it has to do with their own comfort zone and what identity they prefer for you.

my mother spoke czech/english/yiddish/japanese (and recognizes, knows a little polish, russian, german, tagalog (a result of her first marriage), portuegese and currently attempting to learn spanish) but she was and is a lousy teacher. She speaks in english, but mostly 'curses' in czech or japanese ... assuming others around her will not understand.
my first usages weren't in english. But overall I'm more fluent in english.
I know enough czech, hebrew, japanese to get by ... when needed.
I understand some asl, chinese (written more), yiddish, french and a little russian and thai (spoken).
