Hmmmmm........ they're stupid for thinking that photo would not have repercussions. I honestly don't know if they're just totally idiotic or racist.
But then again if they were going to the Olympics held in an African country and did something racist like making their lips look really big or painting their faces black they would definitely be accused of being racist. I guess with racism towards Asians people are not as willing to point fingers because, generally, they have been less persecuted throughout history...

Some Spaniards are, indeed, quite racist, but this issue is not. It is just a bunch of tall guys acting like morons, just as the morons that can be annoyed by this morons.
And the Spaniards call immigrants from Latin America "sudacas" 'cause most of them are from South America (Sudamérica), but that's a term only used by some in Spain... It's like if I dare to say that everyone in the US is a racist prick just 'cause some call mexicans "beaners", "wetbacks" or other people "japs", "niggers"... Those americans are so racist! =P

They have lots of stereotypes like "talking white/black", "acting white/black", "white/black music". If you are black and talk proper english, you are "acting white". If you are white and listen to hip hop you are whigger - same thing with black listening to rock. Totally stupid.

As non-white non-Spaniard living in Spain and living in probably one of the most right wing cities in Spain, I thought I'd give my point of view.
Spain is a country that has received immigrants fairly recently and in a relatively short space of time and due to having been under a dictatorship it is still trying to catch up on what is seen as PC and non PC.
I went to a fancy dress party maybe 3 months ago and a few people were "black faced" to dress up as Mr T or Diana Ross, this shocked my African American friend but he knew they weren't being racist and that the history or the connotations of blackening yourself isn't the same in Spain as it is in the US.
Most Spaniards I know didn't know that the gesture portrayed in the ad campaign would be seen as racist and when they found out a lot were very very very embarassed. In fact maybe 9 years ago a department store called El Corte Ingles ran an ad promoting Chinese products showing a mother and son posing in a similar manner as the basketball team.
Also Spain is very polarised politically due to the civil and the dictorship. A lot of people are very left or right wing. You get racist pricks and then you get the total opposite too...people that want to obliterate Spanishness so immigrants don't feel uncomfortable.
So Racist? No. Racially and culturally ignorant and stupi? Yes
Personally I've never received any racism from Spaniards. Although a Korean friend of mine had people say Ni Hao to her in the streets (is that racist?). Most racism in Spain seems to be directed towards south Americans and Africans.

Racism and ignorance are close cousins. I guess the difference is malevolent intent, which was probably lacking for the Spanish basketball team (though Jose Calderon does play for Toronto, which is the whitest team in the NBA...)

I think it's totally stupid when countries where there are like .05 visible minorities go on about how peaceful and non-race obsessed they are.

Although a Korean friend of mine had people say Ni Hao to her in the streets (is that racist?). Most racism in Spain seems to be directed towards south Americans and Africans. Spain has been a democracy since the 1970s. That's probably enough time to catch up on what's PC and what's not. Also, Spain does not seem to be such an insular society, given that it has already hosted the Olympic Games as far back as 1992. For a country that is bidding to host the 2016 Olympics, this show of ignorance (if not racism) certainly does not help their cause. As others have said, if the Spanish team now already knows that they have caused offense, why don't they all just simply apologize, instead of justifying themselves? So, you personally haven't been to football games in Spain where they throw bananas to or make monkey noises at black players? Do Spaniards know that those gestures are racist or will they plea cultural ignorance as well?
