Here are some funk jams. Some you will know, some you won't.
Perfect Circle - Dipstick
Lyn Collins - Think
Hamilton Bohannon - Let's Start the Dance
B.T. Express - Peace Pipe (just for you, Phil)
George Duke - Reach for it
Temptations (w/ The Commodores) - Shakey Ground
I figure you know all of the P-Funk universe stuff.

Wow thanks swinger! This will be great at work. I just learned that George Clinton was living in Mississauga , my home town when he came up with the mother ship stuff! Kinda crazy cause Mississauga is one of the least imaginative places on earth!!! You may enjoy these shows www.wefunkradio.comthecircleresearchshow.podomatic.com

I like funk music, because it blends elements of Rhythm & Blues, particularly Soul, into it.
Marvin Gaye - Got to give it up
James Brown - Funky president

Lets go to Mr. Progenitor himself. Funk before there was funk. Can't forget the early Chilis... I love the heck out of John Frusciante, but Flea and Hillel had a truly funky synchronicity in all of their songs. Get Up and Jump The Clash had their moments... Magnificent Seven. Primus had their awesome moments too. Who else could combine Funk, Honky Tonk, and Metal -- and just sheer hilarity -- all in one?

Good stuff, good stuff!!! Here are a few more:
The Reddings - The Awakening Dexter Redding was a very funky bassist, taking up in the Larry Graham school
The Brothers Johnson - Thunder Thumbs and Lightnin' Licks Quincy Jones put his jazzy-poppy crappy production stamp on this track, but the underlying funk is still there.
Side Effect - Goin' Bananas A great track from a great label (fantasy) - the bassist was on most funkys track from any artist on the label - Ed "funky thumbs" Reddick.
Cameo - Flirt Before they got 'strange' they were just funky. Started off as a p-funk copy but then found their own style.
Quazar - Funk n Roll P-Funk spinoff, this poor guy died from cancer in his early 20s but squeezed out one album first.
Sun - Sun is Here Leader Sheldon Reynolds, besides being funky, is an amazing guitarist. He took the lead singer role for latter-day Earth Wind and Fire for a few years.
Commodores - Slippery When Wet Before they made gazillions off Lionel Richie's ballads, these guys were a FUNK band. Check it out.
Keep the funk coming!

Great!!! Donald Byrd has lots of funky material. If we're taking a detour into funky jazz (and why not?) let me offer up a couple of tracks:
Ronnie Laws - Always There
Earth Wind and Fire - (prelude +) Africano. (Song kicks in at 1:14). Known more for the accesible poppier tunes, EW&F was a hardcore jazz-funk outfit.

Oh man Jazz funk grooves!! Love EWF. Roy Ayers, Idris Mohammad, Gary Bartz, Bobby Humphrey and Patrice Rushin .. my favourites!
The great thing about Funk is, its free! It flows through genres the way we flow through identities. Jazz funk, Funky house, Latin funk, funky disco, breaks and hip hop - funk infuses , brings energy and that uhhh that makes you wanna shake it!
Its noon here and I'm really feeling this song right now.

Not sure that you serious funk fans will respect, but I have a soft-spot for the G-Funk; probably for me the pinnacle of hip-hop.
*explicit lyrics*
Ice Cube - Bop Gun (One Nation)
Snoop Dogg - Tha Shiznit
Dr. Dre - Nuthin' But A 'G' Thing
Warren G - This DJ
Above The Law - Call It What You Want
Ice Cube - Check Yo Self
