Prince's "Kiss" is as funky as it gets for me. Unfortunately it seems that Prince doesn't appreciate youtube as much as we seem to.
And "Erotic City". And "Housequake".

OK, well, here's the thing....g-Funk is not funk - it's g-funk, derivative at best and most often uniquely interesting non-funk. I do respect the genre and like the tracks long picked out, but it's more than a stretch to call it funk.
By the way, did you know that Warren G is at death's door and/or possibly turning into a vegetable? Very sad...too young.
Now, Tampon Patrol, I marvel at your eclectic tastes in EVERYthing, not just music, but I think you need some more exposure to Marvin Gaye. While not a funk artist, he had such a haunting voice and was such a great composer, I find it amazing that only one song (Got to Give it Up, which was an unpopular leftover studio track thrown on as filler to complete a live double-album) is the only song of his that you like. Here's one -- not too popular -- but something that is quintisentially Marvin:

Derivative sure, but what isn't? I agree it's not funk, but would you at least say it's funky? How about this Marvin cut (my fave): "T Plays It Cool" And no I didn't no that about Warren. Snoop and Dre have been dead to me for a decade..

Long, does this sound familiar?
I also like Prince's stuff. My favourite is "I wanna be your lover" too bad I can't find Prince singing it so I found this video of a guy dancing and signing to it
And my contribution to the Marvin Gaye discussion

ms. I can't say funk is like classic rock where you have those really huge albums that everyone seems to know.
I'd say if you like the G-Funk stuff, just find the stuff that they sampled and let it take you on a 'fantastic voayage.'
But if I had to point you in a direction -------> James Brown

But if I had to point you in a direction -------> James Brown James Brown was the MAN. That voice is classic. That energy was trend-setting. His dancing spawned the phenomenon of today's urban style. Interesting sidenote - he is the most sampled artist throughout the history of hiphop's production.

Hey Phil, or anyone else for that matter, I noticed you linking last.fm. You have an account? No better way I know of for me to take advantage of your funk expertise. Any music lover that isn't familiar with last.fm should definitely check it out. VVV Very nice Phil, thanks. Maybe I'll come back and post any newfound favorites.
