Now, Tampon Patrol, I marvel at your eclectic tastes in EVERYthing, not just music, but I think you need some more exposure to Marvin Gaye. While not a funk artist, he had such a haunting voice and was such a great composer, I find it amazing that only one song (Got to Give it Up, which was an unpopular leftover studio track thrown on as filler to complete a live double-album) is the only song of his that you like. Here's one -- not too popular -- but something that is quintisentially Marvin: Nope, sorry, doesn't work for me. I mean literally the vid won't work. ;D I'm just not a Marvin Gaye fan, what can ya do? I guess I'm not all that into funk at all really. Except to dance to, but I don't own any funk records...hmmm...

^ My tastes changed over time and continue to change. I never get totally sick of a once-favored genre but I do find new styles, explore them if interested, and add them to my collection. I don't think it's a refinement, just quenching a thirst for something...anything...new - and good. As an example, I never though I would enjoy anything other than funk, soul, r&b, and poppy jazz...but...now I am listening to Shoegazer and Psychobilly and a bunch of other genres and really enjoying them. So, maybe Marvin will do something for you later...and maybe never! Oh and I think YouTube has bumped its version of Flash (I had to upgrade my player).

WELCOME!!! I also liked Steve Arrington out of Slave. Great! Thanks!! I remember Tom Browne was heavily sampled for the Evasion's "Wikka Rap" as well as Coolio's "Sumpin' New". I have Tom Browne's LP somewhere around here. I liked "Funkin' for Jamaica" as well. I looked for a YouTube of "Glide" by Pleasure but it's not there. Another funky bass player = Nate Phillips.

Phil, this thread was started for you - glad you're enjoying it!
@nozbee: I remember another, different "Kickin' Back" (not the same song at all) done by LTD
LTD could push out the funk, although they were a little polished.
Here's another one from them: "Jam"
Another band whose sound moved from jazz-funk to disco-soul to smooth jazz is EW&F.
Here's 'Gratitude'

Maybe too jazzy compared to most of the stuff here, but man what a groove. Saw them play last week at the Palace of Fine Arts in San Francisco - boy did they destroy. Best funk/fusion jazz group still playing for my money. Potter and Joshua Redman are THE saxophone players of their generation. Adam Rogers, the guitarist, is really creative too (though I tend to like a more flowing style in general).
