ooh, looks like I've missed a lot of good music....got some catchin' up to do here are some more contributions...felt like posting some laid back grooves. Michael Henderson: Let Love Enter Hahaha....I own this LP. What a picture. So, how is it that someone of your generation is so well-versed in old-school funk...I mean, right down to the granular level of knowing songs from Norman Connors' bassist? Most people I know who I grew up with wouldn't be able to pick out such obscure, high quality work from that era (OUR era), and yet you are quite the aficianado. I know there's a good story there!

Maybe too jazzy compared to most of the stuff here, but man what a groove. Saw them play last week at the Palace of Fine Arts in San Francisco - boy did they destroy. Best funk/fusion jazz group still playing for my money. Potter and Joshua Redman are THE saxophone players of their generation. Adam Rogers, the guitarist, is really creative too (though I tend to like a more flowing style in general). I do like funky jazz, and if I may offer up another B-High grad, here's Rodney Franklin with a timeless piece:

Yeah, that picture is really something lol. It's almost up there with Herbie Mann's "Push Push" album cover lol .I got into Michael Henderson because of his work on Miles's "On the Corner". I was lucky enough to find that LP in the 99 cent bin at a punk record store.Found a lot of other priceless soul and funk gems too....almost made me sad to see them there. I feel very honored to be called an aficianado. Unfortunately, my story isn't very interesting lol. My love for funk all started with Earth, Wind , and Fire. When I first started listening to music I was listening to a lot of rock and punk music on the radio because it was what my friends listened to. Then , I discovered Earth, Wind , and Fire and I've never looked back.

EWF are my faves, Noz. I've seen them in concert many times, including way back in the 70s in Oakland and later at the Budokan in Tokyo.
Time for some funk....we need to celebrate Phil's impending return!

great for drunken dance parties Heh, we danced to that in High School! I went to a concert in 1979 or 1980 with the Whispers, Lakeside, Shalamar, and Dynasty. That thing rocked from start to finish!!! You already posted some Whispers, so... Lakeside - from 9:00 until Shalamar - Right in the Socket (gets going at 0:40) Dynasty - I don't want to be a freak (but I can't help myself) Oh what the heck...this is the FUNK thread...so here is another Whispers tune, a little more on the funk tip: Whispers - Keep on Lovin' Me

^^ I agree with you jenniferbrooke, I feel I was born in the wrong era too. Heh, we danced to that in High School! I went to a concert in 1979 or 1980 with the Whispers, Lakeside, Shalamar, and Dynasty. That thing rocked from start to finish!!! that must have been an awesome concert!I hope one day I'll be able to see a real FONK concert...unfortunately I don't think any of the funk acts still around today would come to my neck of the woods Crown Heights affair- far out 100% pure poison-Windy C

The 90s weren't kind to funk and the few bands holding it down labored in obscurity. That doesn't mean that they weren't funkin' out - they were!

The late bassist, NBA star, and funkologist: Wayman Tisdale. Earth lost some of its funk. But Heaven is positively groovin' now that he's up there^.
