The word stagnate has too many negative connotations. I think you could have said "I changed and they remained the same" instead of stagnate and people would be ripping on you less.
But to cut Ganbare! some slack, he isn't a native English speaker and I don't think it was his intention to put down his old friends.
Anyway, there is a certain Eurasian smugness that most of us succumb to at some point - the idea that we are more open or experienced in multiple cultures and the world at large. And there is often truth to that proposition. The question is whether we use our superpowers for good or evil...

Friends from the past relate to you as you were then, and connect you to parts of yourself you may have neglected or forgotten. It would be unfair to expect the relationship to be balanced as you all have to "catchup" and see if the newer versions of each other are still compatible, or partly compatible.
