Many things lead me to believe class war and struggle for power in multiracial countries increasingly has an ethnic component to it.
Do you perceive social competition for money and other symbolic rewards at an individual level or at a racial level?
In other words do ethnic groups compete against one another or do people compete for these resources individually?

Humans = Greed. There are a number of exceptions, but in the end we will always want more (and/or better) of things within our reach and maybe just beyond. I am not just talking about material things, but also things like knowledge. From the scientist who just wants to understand to the capitalist who wants more money to the individual seeking spiritual fulfilment - we all want something more to a degree.
Those that want the same thing we do, then it becomes a competition. This is at an individual level, its just that some races maybe just ahead in the scheme of things and so it can be seen as an ethnic thing. I would think through the last few thousand years of our history, there have been leaders who wanted power and so they used military might to gain it over those that were weaker. The leaders of that particular race would have been dominant but it was because they only developed faster than their rivals. But in conquering they also created more multiracial nations, this in turn would have caused races and individuals with similar goals to be pitted more closely against one another.

Numerous ethnic lobbies and associations have a powerful influence on policy makers even more at in local politics. I can't count the number of custom-tailored laws for certain groups. Minorities tend to compete socially more as groups than Whites in the West, think of the islamic demonstrations in London, Black civil marches in the US, they definitely are less individualistic and have an heightened sense of consciousness as a distinct group with other members of their ethnicity. Asians are famous for employing other Asians only, especially the ones originating from the same country, many definitely view other groups as rivals.

^ Is Islamic demonstrations and Black civil marches about competition? Isn't it more about minority groups, grouped together by similar experiences, feeling that by working together they can achieve social justice and better lives for themselves?
When someone is a minority, it is much easier to find common ground with those who share a similar background. While if they are still in their own country/part of the world, they would tend to focus more on their own differences. For example, in America, Asians from different countries unite as Asian Americans, as they are minorities from the same part of the world. But in Asia, the different countries really highlight the differences there are between them. Even inside one country, people would for example highlight the differences between southerners, northerners, westerners etc.

Racial and ethnic discrimination does have a large economic basis. Gee, slavery and Jim Crow existed to support the economic system, as does genocide.
