It's a really dumb ad, since I don't really get it.
And the whole point of ads is for people to "get" your product. I guess it is also the point of ads to drum up discussion. Looky looky...it's bad pub, but it's pub. Mission accomplished?
I don't see the racist angle, it would be as dumb/pointless to me if the girl was any color.
The age issue is the only real point of contention for me.

The age issue is the only real point of contention for me. Using a white girl wouldn't have the same immediate impact, unless she was dressed in an unrecognizable traditional costume. That Asian girl with the fobbish hand sign popular in East Asia quickly conveys the message that ad is about pen paling with someone at an Asian country - especially if pen paling is more popular in Asia than anywhere else.

Oh, ok.
I thought it was the peace sign.
Shows you how old and out-of-the-loop I am.

I only watch the historical ones. The hats are really cool, and the fake moustaches are tops.

Sorry EAO, I just can't take the singing shows, the game shows, and the newer dramas.
If I never watched a single episode of 90210, a foreign language version isn't gonna work for me.
Who am I kidding. The only thing on our television right now are the Teletubbies, Sesame Street, and the Wiggles. That isn't likely to change for the next 4-5 years!

When i saw it, i got the impression the girl was happy because she had just boycotted HER pen pal, and thus was celebrating! Maybe its not good to overanalyse ads! Yeah, same with me, I just looked at it and thought "Wow, a happy person"... But honestly, I didn't get the message of the ad.... -.-' Is it about dropping your pen pal ?

I got the impression that the girl was the losser pen-friend that we're being instructed to dump. But at the end of the day different people read the media differently. And I suppose this is how companies such as Virgin can get away with it.

FWIW the girl is from Texas.
The legal controversy with the ad is she (or her parents) didn't sign any kind of model release for her image to be used commercially. The creative commons license covers the reproduction of the image itself, but it does NOT cover the use of identifiable people (which is what a model release is needed for)..
I don't find the ad racist-- but I don't find it very effective either.
