I don't actually think this is a bad thing. Alcohol affects people differently and you don't want an inebriated employee at work. Seeing as work places don't want to administer breath tests to their staff it's easier and fairer to just have a blanket ban on drinking during working hours. I don't think 8 hours is that long to go without alcohol. Then again I'm not that fond of drinking alcoholic beverages. Speaking of cigarettes I think they should be banned too You're quite right, they stink people up. More importantly though is the amount of cigarette breaks smokers take. I know some smokers who must have gotten at least another 45 minutes break per day by taking frequent smoking breaks. If a non smoker were to take that many 5-10 minute breaks to just stand around doing nothing outside they would be fired, yet somehow smokers get special treatment in this regard. The thing about smoking is that it can be physical for some. They NEED their fix. Weaklings, I say, but employers probably figure if it's going to keep their employees from being restless, irritated and keep them focused, they might as well tolerate cig breaks. Considering my boss happens to be a big-time smoker and constantly leaves the store to smoke, I've started claiming "smoking" breaks too. Fair is fair.
