somewhat on topic,i was forced to have dinner with the in-laws the other night.my father in law cracks this gem: 'did you hear that they're upping the tax on aspirin to 40%?it's because they're white and they work.' this is why i avoid spendng time ith these p >:(eople.

Since I've been back in NY, whenever I go to eat out or shopping with either of my parents (usually my mum though), the cashier ALWAYS checks us out separately. And then looks confused when I tell them for the billionth time that we're together. I get rather tired of this...

This is more an example of general ignorance rather than racial ignorance. On Facebook, there is a drawing of me wearing a Japanese flag (my arty friend drew character-cartoon pictures of all his mates).
One comment says "Why is he wearing a Tibetan flag". No one has yet corrected him.

^Amen Sometimes i feel bad though, because what if they're just trying to start a conversation and they're actually curious? I mean they see asian and they're hearing fluent english, i can see how that would be confusing to a gui loh who maybe doesnt live in asia or hasnt been exposed to much over here. Poor rejected gui lohs . I'm guilty of rolling my eyes at that comment though.. I guess having to answer the question irritates me more then the actual ignorance of the person asking it.

I remember when some white guys asked me about my race. When I told them I'm a half-Asian, they were like "Cool, from where in Asia is your mum from" . I was something like "Well, my mum is a platinum Blondie with a Double-D. She's white, my father is Japanese." LOL, they were really shocked when I showed a pic of her: , oh my gosh, how can a sexy woman had something with an Asian .

This was coming from a white man customer back when I was a waitress. him: Where are you from? me: New Orleans him: no, where are you really from? me: I already said, I'm from New Orleans. That's where I'm really from him: no seriously, what is your nationality? me: American him: c'mon now, what is your real nationality? me: My nationality is American. I was born, raised, and have lived all my life here in the US. A legal tax-paying US citizen. By definition, that is my nationality. him: ok, well what about your parents? what is their nationality? me: they're American too After going through this same debate/exchange with too many people on a regular basis, I already knew what he meant. But if they're gonna be that way towards me, I figure I might as well give them a hard time back while I'm at it By this point, he was getting annoyed with me ;D .... him: ok, I ask because my kids are half-korean. You'd think that being a parent of EA kids, he would've been less ignorant/more tactful in his approach. Couldn't help but wonder what his kids' lives were like growing up with a white parent who'd pigeonhole them(or other EA people) based on their ethnicity.

At least you can shove it right back in their face. We can't do anything.

^ At least you guys are socially accepted. For those with white mums people always shake their heads in complete ignorance and racism. The stupid thing is that my father never encountered such in Russia, only when he came to Australia. In Russia it seems Asian fathers with white mothers are more socially accepted and common (in the past at least prior to USSR breakup and Americanisation)
Good thing at least that when people see my family, pictures of my grandfather and everyone on my father's side, them being all huge Uriankhai/Torghuut Mongols - they kinda just go 'ah ok that makes sense'. Still, it's really hard sometimes to even walk down the street with my own wife as she looks caucasian (she's EA too). I don't think this is going to change either, you can't change other people's insecurity.
