When I lived down LA and sported a goatee, I would get spoken to in Spanish a lot.
At a Chinese restaurant, one of the waiters thought for sure I was Japanese. When I told him what I actually was, he looked at me skeptically.
More often than not, though, somebody thinks I'm someone they know. Just random strangers. The latest one was "Tony".

^ Heh!
When I go out to Mexican places with my 1/2 Japanese, 1/2 German friend, the waiters ALWAYS speak to him in Spanish. He just looks at them and looks and me and I then I reply to them in Spanish, which confuses them a little, but they go with the flow. I suggested to my friend that he just learn Spanish - why not?

Lol that is funny A remember a guy at a taco place asked me if I spoke spanish when I was ordering. I assume that he is hispanic since he has the accent when he speaks english and looks it too. I was like..no...sorry. And he was like awww..really? "you should come back more often!" Maybe he's gonna teach me spanish! lawl.

I used to be very tan and my first name is Spanish, so almost everyone assumed I was Hispanic or Amerindian. Over the years, I lost my tan to the extreme end of being freaky pale and I guess most people can tell I'm Asian. I don't really know though, because most people out here have the decency not to ask such personal questions unless they know you well.
The craziest guess I've gotten was in high school, when a white girl asked if my family originated "from Antarctica or Eskimo territory." She wasn't being sarcastic and even more surprisingly, she was an otherwise fairly smart person. I had to double you tee eff that one.

It is so annoying how people ask you personal questions like this when they first meet you. It is like one of the first things I get asked whenever I meet someone. People always stare at me with confused expressions. I always feel like they want to come up and ask the question even before they meet me. I've had people that I've never met that just come up to me and ask what I am. But then again, I've gotten asked that enough to expect it....I'm not embarrassed or anything, but I just wish people would look past things such as race and maybe dig into my personality? Especially since they've just met me like a few seconds/minutes ago.

Especially since they've just met me like a few seconds/minutes ago. Honey, where do you live? Jeez. Where I'm from, it's considered rude to ask a stranger or someone you just met anything about race, religion, etc. I've rarely been asked about my race on first meet here in the Midwest (which could just be because everyone assumes I'm Hispanic or full Asian), but I have noticed people are quicker to ask in bigger, more diverse cities (at least in Washington, DC and Chicago). I would have thought people are less likely to care about race in those cities, but I guess not. And the only people out here who bother asking are usually international students, and I'm guessing they ask because they wonder if I'm from their home country and can speak the language with them. Either way, it is rude and in a way, racist, to ask someone that when you just meet them. People want to know about race so they can subconsciously assign a set of stereotypes and generalizations to you.

I think the 'it's in a way racist' comment is a bit ott to be fair... rude? slightly yes
but come on racist? you said yourself you find your asked in the more diverse cities.
In this day and age its cool to be mixed, it's like the more mixed you are the more exotic you are
I personally don't mind people asking. if they're rude about it I'll be rude back. Usually people are just curious because of my 'unusual' look (their words not mine)
there's been plenty of times when I've seen people and thought hmm I wonder what they are?
It's just curiosity. I highly doubt it's so people can categorize you and treat you accordingly.

Can't remember if I answered this already but just incase not (and i'm way too lazy to search to see if i did) i'll answer again. It depends where i am, if in Indonesia i fit in quite well. if in the U.S. I'm thought to be black or latina. In London, Once I got Indian but just once, but most the time in London ppl just think of me as caribbean. Home, in Bermuda nobody worries w/ what i am. The question initially doesn't bother me, but when asked I am taken a bit off guard, but when ppl see my whole name, i prepare to get asked about it.

I highly doubt it's so people can categorize you and treat you accordingly. 1) Diverse cities are often just as racist as what we think of as "bigoted small towns." 2) I said in a way it's racist, because it's obvious that they are noticing your race first and foremost. To notice that because of some special exoticism is a form of racism, as well as how I pointed out some people only want to know so they can subconsciously assign stereotypes. Not always, but with most people. Referring to Venus Williams as "an African-American tennis player" brings a whole array of thoughts and perceptions in most people's minds than simply referring to her as "a tennis player." 3) It's cool to be mixed? More exotic? You must be one of the EAs that keeps prolonging the stereotypes. This is why there are fetishists in the world. I thought most of the users on this board have gotten past that myth. Why is there a need to know everyone's race? If you think they're attractive, than they're attractive. Leave it at that. It isn't necessary to correlate race.

From what you have just posted Sweetflatulence...
You now have my full and complete respect. My wife feels the same way but her views are not common. I'm glad to find someone else here who feels the same way as her - as I myself have reformed to her views.
You know, I once pushed her to raise our daughter to be Mongol, but now I'd rather my daughter be just like my wife. With such views you are really elevating yourself to become the very future of humanity. Much respect, I just had to say that.

People have mistaken me for Greek, Spanish, new zealander and Japanese; which is weird because I look nothing like a Japanese! I think its because I squint heaps (I hate the sun) (;_;)
