Mixology or the art of making cocktails has recently become a hobby of mine, and it seems like a very fitting topic for an EA forum - mixing two different colors, flavors, tastes to get something unique, something that is frequently better than the sum of its parts or more balanced. [There is another booze thread somewhere but I'm less interested in your favorite type of beer or single malt scotch in this thread.] Please share your favorite cocktails and any unique creations of your own or unusual cocktails you have tried, with recipes if possible so I can try 'em out

I'll start things out.
My all-time favorite is probably the Mojito (rum, sugar, lime, mint, club soda)- a bit standard now but still classic and stands up well because of its balance. I find the type of rum doesn't really matter much, the most important thing is fresh mint and lime and getting the right proportions. I like the club soda version over perrier or other sparkling mineral waters.
My two other all time favorites are the White Russian and the Negroni. The White Russian (vodka, kahlua or other coffee liquer, cream or milk) because it goes down so smooth after a big meal and because the Dude helped elevate it to mythical status in the Big Lebowski. The Negroni (Campari/Sweet Vermouth/Gin) is my most recent favorite because it's complex (due to the herbal character of the vermouth and gin) and bitter (thanks to the Campari). A great pre-dinner drink, though quite a few people don't like it because they're used to sweeter cocktails.
I've liked Singapore Slings the few times I tried them but a bit too complex for me to make at home (I don't keep Cherry brandy or pineapple juice around the house). Probably my favorite "fruity" cocktail so far.
A few recent disappoints were Mint Julep, Old Fashioned and Manhattan. I think it's because I used Maker's Mark and bourbon in general is a bit too sweet for me, though I like using Angostura bitters in a drink. I'm planning to try the drier version using Rye/Canadian whisky, though any tips on what brands to use are appreciated as I've only tried Canadian Club and Crown Royal and I know there are lots of good American ryes out there too.

^ My boyfriend loves negronis... I, on the other hand, do not. I do like gin and tonics though I don't think they classify as a cocktail... not mixed enough? I don't know.

Re: Negroni...betahat, have you tried the one at Corso? If not, make haste!
For me, I'm enjoying the Sazerac (properly made, of course).

My standby is a greyhound. Better with decent vodka and fresh squeezed grapefruit juice.
Haven't tried it yet, but an AMF/Alpha Mike Foxtrot/Adios, Motherf***er sounds like fun time.

putts- what do you think is their secret? I've been using equal parts campari, gin (usually gordon's) and martini and rossi sweet vermouth, but I understand that you can vary both the proportions (some like two parts gin) and the ingredients (though I don't know if there is any substitute for campari). The sazerac is high on my list of things to try but the ingredients are a tad exotic for my home bar (need to think of other things that use absinthe or peychaud's bitters!)
What's an AMF? Not another long island type drink is it?

an AMF is precisely that, also kin to a Tree Smacker.basically a tall glass of mixed booze with enough sweet and sour mix and various other flavorings to allow it to be drunk without choking.blech. Betahat,i think you'll enjoy the whiskey cocktails more with a rye.i tried them first with bourbon and didn't care for them, then through trial and error figured out that i just don't care for bourbon.7 and 7,like Kadude mentioned,is another nice whiskey cocktail.sadly can't recommend any particular ryes. personally i'm simple,Johnnie Walker Red or JD and Coke.

B52, a shot with Bailey's Irish cream, Grand Marnier, and some other crap. I'm into the layered shots, but I swear I'm not a trashy sorority chick. I just love love Bailey's. I like most cream liqueurs.

i love AMF "Adios Mother f***er", it got a mix of everything in there, it's really all i drink these days when i head to the club, but i only drink it when i'm not driving, since i personally think it to be pretty strong.

^lychee midori sours Any idea what the mix is? Sounds deliciously girly (I'm not above it) but I can't find a straightforward recipe. Does it use lychee juice or some kind of lychee vodka?

i have no idea what the names of these drinks are and how you make them.... but if there are fruits perched along the rim of the glass.... lotsa sugar .......and umbrellas poking out..... I'M IN HEAVEN.

You might be thinking about a Mai Tai or a Singapore Sling.

Not too much mixing involved, but rum and cola or gin and tonic have been my standards for the past few years.
^^ Not an official recipe, but if you mix midori and lime juice, you get a decent drink. I like them that way more, takes some of the sweetness from it.
