Where have you been so far? You might have to bite the bullet and take Muni to Chinatown and scout around there.
I forgot the name of the place that I got scowled at, but it was a dirty little dim sum place that had duck and pork hanging in the window. That was good.

i went to the chinatown in SF once, and i gotta say i didn't really like it, the food wasn't all that great, and the customer service was just horrible, the old waiter and waitress stared at me the whole time while i was eating...

In SF? I haven't been to a lot of Chinese restaurants in SF. Betelnut in the Marina is pretty good but it's SE-Asian fusion not Chinese. I went to a nice place in Chinatown once but I don't remember the name. You can't go wrong with Yelp usually www.yelp.com/c/sf/chinesebut sorry I can't recommend anything personally in SF. Go to Peking Duck House if you're ever in New York though.

yeah, i been to SF a few times, and i noticed the quality of food there really isn't that good compared to the ones in LA, and i would definitely not go back to China Town again there... But i also hope that i can find out some pretty good place to eat in SF since i'm prolly gonna go there again soon.

You may want to trek out to the East Bay, maybe Oakland's Chinatown. I've never gotten any char siu or duck from there, but the 99 Ranch in El Cerrito has a "deli" counter of that stuff. Plus you can check out the Pacific East Mall for a bit.

Just went to R&G lounge with some friends. The salt and pepper crab was really good (and the peking duck looked great too), but I didn't try the outrageously expensive shark fin's soup, though I suppose the price befits any dish that uses an endangered species as an ingredient. My vote if we do a Bay Area meet-up.

My vote if we do a Bay Area meet-up. I say we get it in swing. Maybe we can get a holiday thing going, you never know. Offhand, I think we have Yours Truly Betahat Groink Hyper ...I know there are more bay area people, though. Perhaps a new thread is in order.

Anyone who asks this question...must be insane. I assure you that I am not insane. I am just merely mentally challenged. Man, I wanted to try the stuff at R&G lounge since I've heard many good things about it. My ass is too lazy and busy to go over there. Attempted to do a phone order but they said the minimum order for delivery was $300! I've made it an official goal of my life to at least try some food there someday. On the other hand, I did order from Golden Horse and their duck is the best duck I've had in SF and the cheapest! The more fat it is the better. Yum fat. Ooops...Cheapest I don't know about that..but as I remember Tom Kiang was pretty good for the last fifteen years for Dim Sum , Koi Palace down in South City, can be pricey for some but it is interesting and there are a number of interesting Chinese places that specialize in diffferent stuff up and down the Bay Area. One I know that specializes in Lamb in San Mateo or Palo Alto. There are a number of other restaurants that specialize in the forbidden as I remember. Weird seafood from Signapore, Vietnam...who knows how they got it through Customs...but that is pretty easy these days.

Maybe checkout some Chinese restaurants in the Richmond district along Clement, or along Irving Street. I like the quality of their fast food and dim sum when compared to places in Chinatown-which I feel caters to tourists. I have been to 2 restaurants in Chinatown where the food was good-but that was during 2 events my friend's wedding banquet upstairs in some huge restaurant (can't remember the name), and another restaurant between Stockton and Pacific that had a huge Chinese Independence celebration.
