Just TALK. Be clear and honest. don't ignore don't give silent treatment...that stuff just makes it more emotional and unresolvable.

My break up strategies depend a lot on how serious the relationship was. If it wasn't serious, then it's easy: just stop calling and stop returning their calls and avoid the hell out of them. Or sleep with their brother.
If the relationship was serious and you don't want to hurt them or cause drama for yourself, then, as Lara said, you sit them down and be honest with them. But don't be too honest either, there's no reason to be brutal. Oh, and then you need to cut ties to them for at least a few months, or possibly forever. If they're the kind of person that you want to be platonic friends with, you need to realize that you can't jump into that immediately after a break up. All that will cause is a stirring up of unresolved feelings and the inability of either of you to move on. So don't talk to them for awhile after the break up.
