It'll be fine for them. Their cultures are probably dying anyways with a new vain, sexualized, materialized culture invading the world. Religion is just about gone there besides the growth of Islam. As a whole unit, they are very powerful.

It's been in place since 1985.
That's very good for internal dynamism, the counterpart being all the participants have to agree on a mutual immigration policy to some extent. Once you obtained a visa from a member country, you can travel to the rest of them. Some new members didn't have sufficient means to enforce this policy, so the EU had to invest in equipment/training as well.
Western Europeans (and USA) seeked long-term peace; in order to achieve this and given the sociopolitical configuration of the continent, the best solution was integration.

Will European integration work...partially.
The countries will probably split off into different groups within a few decades' time, if history is any guide.
