What is an FOB exactly. Yeah FOB is Fresh Out of Boat and if you get to the context of the phrase, it simply means people that came to America by boat. However, only the refugees come to America by boat. It seems that only Asians classify to be FOB when other nationalities such as Haitian, Carribean, Some Polynesians, South American etc. come by boat also. And worst, the Asian and some Hapa children of the so called FOB are the ones that fondly use the term FOB, when they themselves look FOB Explain

Yeah, my mom screams often, even when she's just talking normal, she's really L-O-U-D!!! yups, im forever having to hush her.. its also worse when she's using a mobile phone! my mum is pretty embarassing a lot of the time, she just has a knack for doing stuff and saying stuff.. she also loves to brag about everything.. and also if we fail at something, for sure, all her friends will know about it too.. my mum also never gets embarassed no matter what she does, or what anyone says!

Okay, now that I understand what you're trying to say, that infuriates me. My mother isn't a "FOB" she's been living in the United States for over 35 years. She now speaks very good english and is a radiologist (Had gotten her degree in the United States, not in the Philippines, I might add. Was on the Dean's list in college.) I suppose what I'm trying to say is that my mother may have done a few embarassing things to me in the past, but I don't think she quite realized it. She still has her "Filipino Moments" but that definitely doesn't mean she's a FOB. I know of other Asians who've lived in the U.S./a western country for 35+ years and they still a bunch of SILLY FOBs!!! It's like some retain certain traits more than others. Though, Asian women married to White men may retain them a bit less and/or if they were exposed to a lot of foreigners when younger. Malaysians and Singaporeans seem to have milder accents vs. Viets, Thais, Filipinos, Japanese, and Taiwanese.

I guess it's somewhat relative. Asians from former European colonies have milder accents.
My mother doesn't really do much of anything embarrassing unlike many other people's Asian parents I've met, thank goodness.
Where is your White mother from and what kind of environment did she grow up in?

Someday, we guys will be parents and will be belonging to the old generation. Our kids will be starting a thread like this and they will also be doing the same thing like what we are doing now. Although there are some things which irritates me about what my Mom is doing, it never really bothers me or embarrass me even if it's in front of strangers or friends. Yes, I do understand the embarrassment we have to face when our Mom starts to do something really embarrassing regarding ourselves or themselves in front of friends or strangers. But, I find it cute and funny and laugh it off. I don't really give a damn what they think as long as I don't hear them making funny remarks about my Mom, I'm cool. Otherwise, I would not hesistate to bash their stinking teeth in whether its my friends or strangers. "I don't have a problem, but maybe you do, let me do a little therapy for you. "

For the record,Asian mothers do not have the monopoly on loudness or embarrassing their children...and even if they do,my whitey mum is loud and embarrassing enough to count as at least three people.lol.

Like many people here I have a loud often embarrassing Asian mum, she's Filipino - need I say more? Like when I'm trying to discreetly point something or someone out to her in public she'll be saying really loudly, "Huh? What? Where? Who/ what are you talking about?" Or if she figures it out (if a person) she'll say, "The one over there?" then indicates VERY, VERY indiscreetly. But I love my mum, even though she does have those Filipino moments.
